potratz Posted February 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi All, I am new to the digital processing world and am setting up the software I will need. My plan is to use Light Room since it seems it is receiving more updates and attention over Aperture even though I am a Mac Diehard. So in looking in additional software I have came across the Nik Software complete package but I am unsure of the pro and cons of getting the complete package for LR or PS? Side Note: I am unsure how much of a use I will have for PS but have it available on my computer now as I also have LR. Please advise and thank you, Paul

LuxBob Posted February 9, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 9, 2010 I am an Aperture user on a Mac as against LR. I use Aperture as it is a superb management package with what is said to be a good Raw processor and some excellent adjustment tools. Many speak just as highly of LR. I am also a Nik s/w user. unfortunately I bought mine one at a time and that is expensive. Even if you cannot see the need now, if you are an avid, competent photographer you will soon grow into the Nik packages. One thing to be aware of, if you are in Europe, Nik charge a much higher price for zero additional benefit. Find a way to get it sent to a friend in the USA or buy it when on a trip. Edit. Purists will tell you that anything that Nik does for you, you can do yourself in PS. True but most of us only live one lifetime and sometimes taking the easier route can be the right decision. johnwolf Posted February 9, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 9, 2010 Paul, I believe if you buy the Nik PS version you get the LR version automatically for free. So you could try it both ways and see which you like better. I use NiK ColorEfex and SilverEfex, but I find them way too slow in LR. I use a PC and although it's not the latest technology, it is a fairly robust system. LR itself is fast but the Nik products just bog down in LR. Both run quite fast in PS. I also print from PS because LR does not yet offer soft-proofing. And I prefer the adjustment layer approach that Nik products uses in PS. So lately I find myself using LR less and less. But you sure can't beat LR for processing many images. Best to download the trials and see for yourself. John
londonuk Posted February 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 23, 2010 I use Lightroom and PS on an Intel Mac pro and have found the Nik silver efex is embedded in my pS and Lrm. I think they are worth a good look at. In my experience, the silver efex is the best BW converter I've tried. I have also read a review in British Journal of Photograhy (last week) of the new Viveza 2 and it concludes that it's so good you hardly need to go to Pshop. I certainly can recomend the silver efex and I think the Nik sharpener is worth a look too.
JTrunck Posted February 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2010 The NIK collection is sold two ways - one for PS which includes LR and Aperture, and the other for just LR and Aperture (substantially cheaper). The current collection works fine for LR and Aperture 3, but in the latter case, A3 will shut down and switch from 64 bit mode to 32 bit mode since the Nik package is 32 bit. No big deal. The Nik collection incudes Viveza 2 which is great. Jim http://www.jintrunck.com
