Should I buy official Leica batteries at around £65 in the UK or try some of those cheaper options in ebay etc... My instinct is to stick with Leica... However I have seen several forum posts about the cheapos not working well. At this point I am sticking to Leicas. Just stocking up for a couple of big trips using my M9... 3rdtrick Posted February 8, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2010 Hmmmm, I spent $7000 on a camera... I think I will cheap out on the batteries. I bought one extra battery and it was Genuine Leica and may buy one more of the same. Yes $80 US was a little steep but at least I know they will work properly. thrice Posted February 9, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 9, 2010 I have two ebay ones, they work fine, the catch is you have to fully drain them before recharging (slightly decreases the life as the battery goes through more full cycles) but they aint bad at all. Get more or less same amount of shots on both. Maybe ebay battery will "die" before. Time will tell. But.....you can buy 4 cheap on one original!! I'm sure Leica manufactures no batteries. The camera will not recognise on a fully charged battery unless it has been fully discharged before charging, but there is a caveat to that. If the camera says when switching it on 'battery low switch off camera' (and you know its fully charged) just press 'Set' and carry on shooting. At some point the camera will say to itself 'this is impossible, my meter has just gone into negative figures' (or something like that), and it will reset itself to an accurate charge state. I was sick of having to charge up the one battery I had before I went any where and not knowing how long the battery would last for. I haven't had the M9 long and, due to events beyond my control, I haven't had much of an opportunity to use it yet. That said, my overall impression is that Leica need to get their arse in gear in relation to availability of products and making sure their products work properly before they release them. I just noticed the 'red edge' issue in one of my shots. It makes my mind boggle that such a fault can exist in what is such a high end camera. When using the camera it seems quite 'fussy' about how quickly you do things, such as zoom in on an image. The screen is mediocre to say the least. My gut feeling is that I'll be selling it all off before too long and getting a Nikon D700x instead (when it's released) and pocket the few £k difference. Opps! Wasn't intending that turning into a whinge. I guess I've been bottling that up. When you have spent so much you expect great things. Nothing has blown me away about it as yet.
