wda Posted February 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have installed the Alien Skin Blowup plug-in in my Windows 7/64 bit CS4 folder and dragged and dropped it into the appropriate Adobe 'Plug-ins' folder yet it does not appear when I select 'Automate' in the File menu. It worked perfectly on my old PC with CS2; but seems reluctant to appear in my new setup with Windows 7 and CS4. Has anyone got a good suggestion as to how I can get this useful plug-in to be recognized? I have checked and found that the identical files exist in the Plug-in folder in my old PC (Windows XP with CS2) and my new PC as described. I have to report excellent support from Alien Skin in transferring usage between PCs, but this recognition problem is more of a OS problem.
Advertisement Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Hi wda, Take a look here Getting Alien Skin plugin to work in Windows 7. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hoppyman Posted February 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2010 David I don't have that Plug In but do have others. I've recently swapped from CS4 on a XP 32 bit to the 64 bit version on Windows 7 64 bit. I'm going to guess that you might be seeing the same issue I had (with Neat Image Pro). The old version doesn't work even though you've copied it to the appropriate folder. In the case of Neat Image Pro, I needed to buy an upgrade which was discounted for owners of the previous version (but still required a new payment). Take a look on your Alien Skin website? Send them a mail? Incidentally, Photokit for Windows and Photokit Sharpen did not require an additional payment to work with CS4 64 bit. I just needed to sort out activations with their customer support.
wda Posted February 9, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted February 9, 2010 Geoff, thank you. Yes, similar experiences. Alien Skin have and are giving me excellent support which is ongoing. I had a sudden subliminal idea and reinstalled the plug-in in both 32 and 64 bit versions of CS4. It works on my new computer in 32bit mode but not 64 bit. I have asked for clarification but suspect it is not cleared for the latter. I will post an update if I get it resolved.

In fact, most of mine aren't So even on 64 bit windows I"m using 32bit Photoshop, which is a drag...
hoppyman Posted February 10, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 10, 2010 I found this on the Alien Skin website. So some of their apps are good to go and some future updates for others? "All of our current Photoshop Plug-In based Windows Retail products install and are compatible with the 32 bit version of Photoshop CS 4 on Windows Vista 64, XP 64, and the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Currently, Blow Up 2, Bokeh, Snap Art 2, and Eye Candy 6 are compatible and will run in the 64 bit version of CS 4 on these platforms, but all of our other plug-ins must be installed into and run from the 32 bit version of CS 4. All future product releases and full version upgrades will be 64 bit compatible."
wda Posted February 10, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 10, 2010 Geoff, thank you. I have emailed my question to Alien Skin and await a reply. It does appear that the older version of BU will only work in 32bit mode, which I have proved. (Later: Jim White of Alien Skin has just telephoned me and confirmed that the specification, as quoted by Geoff above, is correct. So the choice for owners of the original plug-in is clear. Use it with Photoshop in 32bit mode, or upgrade the plug-in. As Blow Up 2 is a superior product, perhaps that is the way to go.)
wda Posted February 10, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted February 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is an update to my earlier posting. Please ignore the partial update given above. The Administrator cut me off due to 'time expiry'. Jim White (Technical Support) of Alien Skin has just telephoned me and confirmed that the specification, as quoted by Geoff above, is correct. So the choice for owners of the original plug-in is clear. Use it with Photoshop in 32bit mode, or upgrade the plug-in to take advantage of 64bit processing. As Blow Up 2 is a superior product with more user-friendly features, perhaps that is the way to go. I would like to record my complete satisfaction with the product support given by Alien Skin. They could not have been more helpful in solving problems in migrating their products from my old to new computer and resurrecting old license codes. Initially I had thought that I might have to start the whole process again.
Jamie Roberts Posted February 11, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 11, 2010 Hmm. I'm less than "happy" with them, since I'd like to use their Exposure filters, in particular, in 64 bit PS. Ah well. Pity they didn't say when the compatible versions were coming.
JHAG Posted February 11, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 11, 2010 Hesitating since a long time about Alien Skin. As I'm about to shoot a series of close portraits for a client who wants outdoor and nature shots (hence requiring some tweaking for blemish usw. in PP), I wondered if I it was time to plunge for Image Doctor. Is it worth it ?
stunsworth Posted February 11, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 11, 2010 I wondered if I it was time to plunge for Image Doctor. Is it worth it ? There's a free 30 day trial... Downloads - Choose Products I've been using Exposure for a few years and use it for almost all my b&w conversions, I've no idea about Image Doctor though. JHAG Posted February 11, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 11, 2010 Thanks, Steve, I'll try it. For B&W conversion, is use Silver Efex, but I'll compare with Expo.2.
Jamie Roberts Posted February 12, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 12, 2010 Thanks, Steve, I'll try it. For B&W conversion, is use Silver Efex, but I'll compare with Expo.2. ,,,,which also doesn't work in 64 bit BW from one or the other is 50 / 50 IMO. Nik gives you more control and options; Exposure is faster to use
stunsworth Posted February 12, 2010 Share #13 Posted February 12, 2010 BW from one or the other is 50 / 50 IMO I'd agree with that, if you have one or the other and are happy with it there's probably no need to switch to the other.
