Having used the X1 for a few days now and loving it i have had a couple of repeat SD card issues. When importing photos into Aperture i occasionally get a message saying the card had previously not been ejected properly and that a few of the photos are corrupt and can not be imported. They are neither at the end of the sequence of photos i took nor at the beginning.

They all seemed fine on the X1 when i took them, but i presume the preview on the X1's LCD shows the jpeg and not the DNG i took with it, and it is the DNG that Aperture says is corrupt.

I am using 16GB Sandisk extreme III card and the X1 reads it fine and formats it fine.

When shooting the X1 i haven't noticed any issues (other than nocking the aperture dial accidentally...) that would lead me to think that a file hadn't been written correctly. Given the issues the M9 has had with SD cards i just wondered if anyone else has had any issues?

Did you try importing them to a new folder on your desktop and opening them with 'preview'?

Can you open the files then?

Might be an Aperture-thing. Though the X1 RAW's are universal DNG's I doubt Apple has written a profile for the X1 yet.

Aperture (Apple) is slow with updates for new camera's.

Did you have other equipment connected? iPhone, usb-stick, etc?

when aperture said there was a problem i immediately tried what you suggested and preview couldn't open the file either.

There was nothing else plugged in at all, and i've never had this with CF cards from my Canon...

Strange...

I hope your photo's where 'just' testshots and not once in a lifetime opportunities...

Keeping my fingers crossed it's not an X1 issue.

Perhaps there was some kind of weird combination of circumstances.

Have you tried formatting another SD card, shooting a few DNG's and import them into Aperture?

I've now formatted the sd card and a second one and will go for a larger shoot this weekend and then we'll see. Like you said I'm just hoping this doesn't become an 'issue'.

Why not do a trial with a smaller card and just fill it up with any subject. Then try importing the images. It could be a faulty 16gb card, although Sandisk are usually thoroughly reliable. I would definitely shoot a shorter trial rather than spoil a weekend opportunity.

I was given a Sandisk 4gb extreme card with the camera so will be testing that fully along with my 16gb this weekend. I intend to copy the files off onto another mac before trying to import into aperture. So we'll soon see...

I just sold my Leica X1 camera and I was having issues showing the buyer how to shoot a picture. He brought a Samsung sd card and when I put it in the camera it said do you want to format it? If I said no it said remove the card. Next time I decided to say yes and it had been circling around trying to format but it was taking so long I just stopped the process by removing the card. I inserted my own scan disk micro sd card holder and the camera went on to picture mode without asking if I wanted to format the card. Why was the camera acting this way? Also when I set the month day and year and hour and minute and then saved it and turned the camera off, it came back on and I was to set the sane settings all over again. Why? It did it each time the camera went back on. Another thing, my battery was running low in charge and it was red in the upper right hand corner. So maybe that is why it was acting like this?

Because you most likely put in a (probably much too large) SDXC card in. These did not even exist when the camera was new. It cannot handle it.  When you use a card from another camera you must ALWAYS format it, preferably in the computer using SdFormatter. (free)

That sounds like the internal back-up battery has become discharged. You may be able to restore it by fully charging the main battery and leaving it in the camera for a few days. From the manual:

'The replaceable battery provides power to a back-up battery that is per-
manently fitted in the camera. This back-up battery retains the set date
and time for up to 3 days. If this back-up battery becomes discharged it
must be recharged by inserting a charged, main battery. Once the re-
placeable battery has been inserted, the full capacity of the back-up bat-
tery is recovered after about 60 hours. This process does not require
the camera to be turned on. However, you will have to set the date and
time again in this situation.'

If this does not work (and the main battery is charging normally and holding its charge), the internal battery may need to be replaced, which would require a service.
