Shutter Speed Dial

I have two issues. The first is that when I turn the shutter speed dial, the image quality setting changes from raw to jpg. You can see it reflected in the frame count. It tends to jump back and forth. The actual images are indeed changed. Has anyone experienced this problem?

The second issue is that the camera did this when I first bought it from a member of this group just days before the M9 was announced. Because of being horrendously busy and distracted, and because it happened so infrequently, I just let it go. It is getting worse, though, and I have no confidence in this camera.

Obviously, this was not an unknown problem to the previous owner, but he failed to disclose it. Is that how we do business here?

I'd guess you have an M8.2 - and the jpeg/dng change occurs when you pass the "S" on the dial (for "snapshot/simple" mode - which sets the camera to produce only jpgs).

If that is the case - it is normal operation.

If it is occurring at other points on the dial (say, switching directly from 500 to 250 or something like that) - or you have a plain M8, then you have a different problem we can discuss.

Actually, the camera has now had a massive failure. It shoots at whatever iso it wants, doesn't turn off when the switch is off, shoots jpg instead of dng-just a whole host of problems. There are less than 100 shots on it since I bought it in July from one of the members.

Guess I'm done with Leica.

This is definitely not typical operation for either version of M8. I would go through the menu and make sure your settings are set correctly, or maybe do a reset to the camera. It sounds like it has been set to Auto ISO somehow.

Does sound like a major system failure. At the very least it would appear it is randomly going into "S" mode even when the dial is set elsewhere. "S" mode turns on jpegs-only and Auto-ISO, which would explain those particular settings going wacky.

The refuse-to-turn-off can usually be fixed by pulling out the battery for a few seconds. But in combination with the other problems, it likely needs a full review in Leica's service dept.

Before taking that route - or dumping the camera - you might try a full reload of the firmware (2.004). Costs nothing and takes about 15 minutes total with a fast computer.
