Leica's logistics upgrade affects repairs, too

I'm one of those who has complained that Leica doesn't seem to have the internal tracking systems that you would expect of a modern company, with the result that things disappear for long, unexplained periods, and rumors accumulate. They are apparently doing something to change this, with side effects such as the two-week gap in new camera deliveries that were commented upon in this forum. Here's my recent experience:

tracking a repair with the Solmser Statusabfrage web page (does the US have this as well now?)

sent M8 for rangefinder alignment and CLA

-- received in Solms and repairs estimated 11.1.10

-- approved, and repairs completed 20.1.10

-- shipment in process 2.2.10

Then I received a UPS tracking email (like a "Click-N-Ship" notice that USPS generates) saying that on 4.2.10 UPS had received the shipment papers by electronic transfer, and I expect to see the camera at the start of next week, with full route tracking to keep me entertained in the meantime. (It is spending today in Istanbul!) But 15 days between completing the repairs and having the camera boxed and labelled for shipment sounds like the same backlog delay that the M9 deliveries have encountered. I hope that goes away.

Scott, what you say does make sense - It wouldn't surprise me that Leica would have the same basic systems and processes for the dispatch of both finished product and repair/replace items. Equally, it would make sense for them to use the same external supply chain.

Bill
