A case for the X1

No, not an argument for the X1!

The first deliveries of the X1 in the UK do not include any pre-ordered accessories, nor even the rumored free case, although that might follow in due course. So owners will be rummaging for something suitable for basic protection. My immediate solution is the soft fabric bag which was delivered with my Leica CM a few years ago. I never used it after getting the superb leather case. Fortunately I kept it and find that it is perfect for the X1 with its draw-string tie. While it is certainly not waterproof, it does give a modicum of protection against abrasion of the LCD and dust when the camera is not in use. When using the camera, the soft bag can be secreted in a pocket quite easily and unobtrusively.

While many of us will have a varied collection of old holdall bags, the joy of a compact camera is traveling unfettered. I guess it is inevitable that the 'case' issue will generate some discussion. Maybe this thread will accommodate them.

I plan to just wear mine around my neck or shoulder ... not sure if I want to bother with a case. I would love a case to protect it, but don't want the hassle of carrying the case when I'm using the camera. I'll go bareback!

I received my X1 today and have ordered the so called Rina case from Artisan & Artist. The Rina case features a tough ballstic nylon outer shell, with a soft and smooth neoprene inner lining that provides a very high shock-absorption to bulk ratio. Besides protecting your Leica camera from scratches and dings, the case is highly water resistant. As far as I understood, this is a limited edition product.

Sounds like the case I've been looking for!

I'm in Amsterdam, where did you buy yours?

Thanks, Peter

Infinite, I have looked at the Rina case as shown on the website. I have a feeling that it would suit an M outfit rather better than the X1, even if the latter had a grip fitted. I would be interested in your report of actual usage.

I collected my X1 one today. The free case for those who ordered early last year is not a rumour. They are going to be provided.

Just a suggestion for buyers when collecting their cameras. Inspect the screen well for micro abrassions. I found a few - very slight but enough to reject on.

The soon to be available X1 custom case will not accomodate the accessory handgrip ... so if you think you might need a handgrip consider an alternative case.

Cheers

Correction ... the leather case will not accomodate the handgrip but the 'Ever-Ready Case' will ...

WDA, you are right the Rina case is originally made for the M, however I believe that the X1 with the neck strap would suit nicely. If I'm wrong then the case will have to wait till I have saved for the M9 or M10!

You really do not need a case for such a camera. The places which I intend to take pictures with this x1 will be in the hills of indigenous Miao mountain people in Kueichow or in the favelas cariocas of Rio de Janeiro, both places which will have the strap cut off (if not my head) if seen me carrying a camera. What I have done is to hide my small point and shooters stealth as I can, and of course with x1 and its superior APS sensor it would be quite interesting. Have anyone able to download a User's Manual in English yet?

Eduardoho, Have you looked at the manual in the X1 box? My manual is in many different languages. The favelas cariocas? Boa Sorte e divirta-se! I will be taking pictures in south east London so I will take my stab vest. I have one you can borrow.

Eduardoho, I would have thought that a discreet pouch on your waist belt in front of you would be pretty useful when you need two hands for non-photographic activities! In any event, your scenario is hardly typical of most users' needs. I will be interested to hear how the X1 performs in such an environment.
