Leicakillen Posted February 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) This might be the wrong forum for this but may be someone can help me; - I have a new Epson 3800 which gives me fantastic prints from my M9 - very good. I always use Epson Matte papers - I like them very much. - However, I also use the 3800 for everything else I print - and here is a small problem. When I hit the print button and just hit print again the printer by default choose the setting for Premium Luster Photo Paper and thus switches over to the Photo Black cartridge, from the Matt cartridge (the correct way is of course to choose the paper you are using - but I forget sometimes). This takes time and is annoying. I would like to set the printer using Matt Black ink by default - not the ink for Luster paper. Anyone of you experts have a clue? adan Posted February 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 3, 2010 "When I hit the print button and just hit print again..." Can you give more detail about what you mean here? A button in Photoshop or LR or on the printer itself or what? I have never seen a "Print Again" button, so I assume you mean 'just hit "Print" again'. On my Mac, using Photoshop CS 4, hitting the print button brings up a print preview window. There is another print button in that window, and when I hit it, I get to the Epson Driver window. Unless I make a change there, it always uses the last settings I used (Luster or Matte or whatever). In other programs, hitting "print" still always brings up the Epson driver window, and still uses the previous settings UNLESS I make a change. HOWEVER - if I make a change in the Epson Driver window, that change has to be "saved as" a new printer "preset", or the printer will use the change once and then throw it away and go back to the most recent saved settings. Maybe that is what is happening to you? The sample below is just a quick printing attempt from Safari - but shows how one would save a group of settings as a preset. Once saved, those settings are the "default" until I choose a different preset from the "Presets:" drop-down menu. The "save as" option is also under the "Presets:" menu. Leicakillen Posted February 3, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted February 3, 2010 Andy, thanks for helping me. Printing photos I always use Matte paper, so the printer is using Matte Black ink. When I then would like to print a e.g. Word document I go to Print and get the "Print Out" box. If I just hit OK here, the printer chooses the default printer setting - which is Premium Luster Phot Paper which means that Epson start changing ink from Matte Black to the other black ink. This is annoying, takes time and ink is spent into the maintenance cartridge . The right workflow is of course to go to Properties in the Print Out box and here make your choice of the right paper - always Plain for ordinary printing which uses Matte ink. But sometimes I forget this - which means ink changing.....Is there a way to set up the printer so Matte ink is the default ink, and not the Photo Black ink for glossy papers. /Anders
Leicakillen Posted February 3, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted February 3, 2010 Hmmmm...the printing box is not the same Mac vs Win - I have Win. Seems to me the you can save a default setting in Mac - not possible in Win, strange... /Anders
delander † Posted February 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 4, 2010 I have not tried it, but according to the 3800 manual - pages 12-13, the settings you make for the printer from the Windows control panel (XP) via properties become the default settings for the printer. Leicakillen Posted February 7, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 7, 2010 Thanks for good input - issue solved via the control panel where you can choose default media etc. No unnecessary ink changes anymore.... /Anders

There you see Epson 3800. Right click on the Epson and go to "printer adjustments" (I am not sure about the english wording here - but it is the second on the list - not the last, which is Properties). In this box you can choose your default settings - click on OK and it´s done!! Hope this helps Regards Anders
