allan dew Posted February 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) yesterday i took a nasty fall into a roadway unfortunately my M9 with my 50mm summicron lens was crushed between my chest and the pavement. the built in lens hood is now unable to retract (serious dent). camera still working fine (a little brass showing on top corner) but otherwise ok. i am trying to decide where in the USA to send the lens to get it checked out and repaired. any suggestions? allan
Advertisement Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Hi allan dew, Take a look here lens repair. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
thrice Posted February 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 1, 2010 Hi Allan, I'd send it to Sherry Krauter if for whatever reason you don't want to send it to Leica NJ. DAG is always a little backed up. You could try and leapfrog the middle man and send it straight to Solms, depending on the degree of the damage; if the barrel is warped it should probably go to Solms, if it's just the hood most repairers could probably source the spare part. AGeoJO Posted February 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 1, 2010 Allan, Don Goldberg (DAG Camera Repair) is providing an excellent service for anything Leica and then some. He did a great job for me recently. But he is a one-man shop and can be really busy. Don can be reached at dagcam@chorus.net and his number is (608) 835-3342. Hope this helps. JeffreyTotaro Posted February 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2010 Hi Allan: Is the lens still under warranty? I believe this sort of thing is covered under the passport warranty which means you have to send it to Leica.
tdtaylor Posted February 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 1, 2010 I'd send it to Sherry Krauter if for whatever reason you don't want to send it to Leica NJ. I second this. Sent Sherry a lens for CLA, and in one week it was completed for less than $100. Excellent communication. Just sent her a second lens with the check. I currently have my M9 in to Leica NJ for a rangefinder focus adjustment. Not very good communication, but I did receive an estimate Saturday, looking like the work was completed- although I am baffled by the estimate. If I receive it back in the next 2 days it will have taken 3 weeks.
Stef63 Posted February 1, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 1, 2010 Also I would verify (with another lens) if the RF focusing is still spot on. Otherwise you should have your M9 re-calibrated too.

brill64 Posted February 1, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 1, 2010 sorry to hear about your fall. it's something i've done, i guess everyone does at some point. take care and maybe try to keep it in a small camera bag when practical to do so. hope you can get it back soon! tdtaylor Posted February 2, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 2, 2010 Just got a notice from Leica NJ. Ready the middle of the month for a repair not needing parts. Probably will be 4-1/2 weeks total . Notice said several weeks, just got an email saying it was shipping out tomorrow- wonder why I am now throughly confused. I thought Nikon had communication issues (although they have always been very prompt), but this is a total communication screw up. Just send it to Sherry! gwelland Posted February 2, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 2, 2010 Sherry did a great job fixing a 35 'cron ASPH I had a while ago that I dropped in a canvas unpadded bag onto a tile floor. It was jammed solid. She was very reasonable and pretty quick turnaround and performed not only the repair & part replacement, but also did a full top to bottom CLA on the lens. The lens came back as good as new for a fraction of the price of replacing it.
