AbbeyPhoto Posted January 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Probably a silly question, I'm thinking of buying a Zeiss 21mm for my M8, don't want the expense of a Leica as it won't get used much. Is it necessary and / or desireable to 6-bit code Zeiss lenses (assuming they don't come pre-coded)

Ronazle Posted February 2, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2010 It is necessary, at least for color work. Leica factory coding provides pretty much an optimal answer but is of no help with Zeiss lenses. If the mount is formally coded by a technician, the f:2.8 is much simpler; Zeiss advises they will not sell an uninstalled mount for the f:/4.5 - they insist factory installation is necessary and advise against removing the mount. I've had very good luck coding the F:/4.5 with fine black lines, instead of a dot, of black paint in a groove hand cut by a Swiss file. Also, white paint is put into the screw hole. The coding works fine -the lens is coded as a f:/2.8 Elmarit. I consider it my best lens. An alternate and probably a Superior approach is to buy the Zeiss filter which accomplishes both the IR cut function AND COMPENSATION FOR THE CORNER COLOR SHIFT. While the filter is expensive, it is probably worth it. I tried to do this but the Zeiss agent in the U.S. either couldn't or wouldn't order the filter for me. regards, ron:)
AndrejK Posted February 2, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2010 Hello, this was discussed before, here is the link to my post. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/78480-21mm-f4-5-zeiss-m8-2.html#post859934 Both version of Zeiss 21 should now be available with the correct mount and the recess for coding. My f4.5/21 Zeiss ZM works perfect for me (coded). Andrej
