Logic108 Posted January 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was looking over at Steve huff's website and he seemed to think that the lens on the X1 was of very high quality. With a 1.5x FOV the 24mm Elmarit on the X1 turns out to be a 36mm lens which is close to the 28mm Elmarit on the M8. O.k so as a small companion camera to an M8 or M9 would you sell your 24mm Elamrit to fund the purchase given that the IQ might be the same or similar? By the way I hope Sean Reid can do a comparison here. Who would go for a set-up like this: X1 at 36mm along with M8.2 with 50 'lux. One other question is that as far as I can tell the X1 sensor has an AA filter. So wouldn't this result in an IQ deterioration?
Advertisement Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Hi Logic108, Take a look here Would you swap a 24mm Elamarit for the X1?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
holgerf Posted January 31, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 31, 2010 Well, I can’t imagine that I would carry M8 plus X1 instead of having the M8 with two lenses. Parallel usage of bodies with a very different "use and feel" sounds odd to me. The X1 would be my companion if the M8 is still to big. So for me it would probably the either or the other to carry. Just my two cents… Best Holger
Logic108 Posted January 31, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 31, 2010 I imagine that the form factor differences would feel strange as well as focusing. Looking over at Sean Reid's site the image quality is really good - but also the ISO is much better than the M8. I'm thinking that the X1 gives two more stops than the M8 at 35mm FOV. The one thing I think is strange is why they haven't included a remote camera release. I'd love to have a simple wireless remote especially given how quiet the shutter is. Anyway initially I had dismissed the X1 but after reading about the thinner AA filter and about how nice the image quality is I'm thinking that I could have a set-up that gives me more at 35mm than my Elamrit 24mm and M8 does. Ecaton Posted January 31, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 31, 2010 The 24mm Elmarit lasts for a lifetime and keeps its value. The X1 will be bettered by the next generation of compact fixed lens cameras, and loose value accordingly.
jsrockit Posted January 31, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 31, 2010 I don't think it is the worst idea....since I'll be using one M and one X1. Just don't expect the lens to compare to the $4000 24mm that Leica makes for the M.
wda Posted January 31, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 31, 2010 If you can master the relative erganomics of handling both together, I think the M8 and X1 would make an excellent pairing. It avoids changing lenses in public places, assuming that the environment is unsuitable, and gives you the advantages of a smaller camera, when the M8 is stowed, and you wish to appear less like a serious photographer. How you fund the X1 is a personal decision. I would try both before sacrificing a prime lens for the M8
