mwilliamsphotography Posted December 10, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) My friend Irakly has returned from Russia, and has tons of new work done with the M8 ... sans IR filters. He also showed me the new Adobe Camera RAW update and how to apply it to the M8 files to override the camera profile and auto WB every image. First here are a few of his shots ... he is standing right here and has given me the images and permission to show them ( free of charge, he just quipped : -) He will upload others later to a larger size. rfleica Posted December 10, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 10, 2006 Typically excellent - stimulating and witty - shots from Irakly. is that a streak though that I see on shot #3? Two thirds from left to right?
mwilliamsphotography Posted December 10, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted December 10, 2006 Hi Guy, pretty simple. Irakly set it up for me, and I opened a bunch of stuff I shot in NYC which was all over the place in terms of white balance ... applied the PS up-date and wham they all were very close with no work except a few exposure adjustments. I wish I had this ARC set up for that M8 wedding stuff I had to do in C-1 : -( Here's how: Close PSCS2 and Bridge. Update Photoshop CS2 (go to help, update). This automatically updates ACR to version 3.6. Then fire up Bridge and open a M8 file. Go to the "Calibrate" tab and select ACR 3.6 under "Camera Profile" (this overrides the camera set profile). Then select "AUTO" in the WB selector. Then click on the little arrow and select " Save New Camera RAW Defaults". Give your computer time to update all the files, then make minor exposure adjustments if needed.
mwilliamsphotography Posted December 10, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted December 10, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, it is probably a slight banding streak on that shot which was ISO 1250. Irakly will be sending his M8 camera to Leica for the "Upgrade". Hee, hee, I think he mistakenly gave me a shot from another camera ... the last one : -)
Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 10, 2006 Share #8 Posted December 10, 2006 Thanks Marc i will do this on my desktop machine when I get home this evening. These shots look very clean.
nrj Posted December 11, 2006 Share #9 Posted December 11, 2006 Hee, hee, I think he mistakenly gave me a shot from another camera ... the last one : -) hi Marc I'll bite - its square format but doesn't look like film. I'm hoping its from your CFV since I think the colours (as well as the model) are gorgeous Nik
imported_peter_m Posted December 11, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 11, 2006 Marc, Where do you get the ACR 3.6 profile from? I updated to version 3.6 but the only profile that shows is ACR 2.4. Excellent shots! Pete

mwilliamsphotography Posted December 11, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted December 11, 2006 The square one was from a Kodak 645C ProBack on a Contax 645 with Zeiss glass. Irakly will have to comment on what lens he used ... (remember, these are his photographs). He can answer any questions on the RAW plug-in. I'm printing last Saturdays wedding stuff, and I gotta tell you, the M8 stuff is looking better than my Canon images taken at the same time. Web is one thing, printing is another. Hmmm, maybe David was more right than I thought.

Irakly will have to comment on what lens he used ... (remember, these are his photographs). Oops, I did mess up. The square picture is indeed from Contax 645/Kodak DCS ProBack. Anyway, I have almost 10GB of M8 images that I have to go through, so you will definitely see some more. Irakly

imported_peter_m Posted December 11, 2006 Share #15 Posted December 11, 2006 Try this: Adobe - Photoshop : For Windows : Camera Raw 3.6 update Thank you Ed, I did have the update already..... just thought I be missing some profiles, I think I figured it out. If in doubt check the manual Peter
Jamie Roberts Posted December 11, 2006 Share #16 Posted December 11, 2006 Marc, Thanks for the tip. I updated to 3.6 already awhile ago, but since I *don't* like ACR for workflow (C1 suits me much better) I hadn't tried it. It's a lot better than it used to be. Auto WB was already set up, as was the ACR 3.6 profile (I didn't even need to select it). I still prefer C1 for colour too, but I'm happy to know that other RAW converters are getting there with the M8.
rosuna Posted December 11, 2006 Share #17 Posted December 11, 2006 Dear Irakly, I read your wonderful article about the Contax N Digital some time ago (at The Luminous Landscape). I would like to know your opinion about the Leica M8. Great pictures. A pleasure to see them. Best, R.
Jean LeBlanc Posted December 11, 2006 Share #18 Posted December 11, 2006 The skin tone on the last image looks bad, note the legs in particular. Could this be IR contamination? Joseph Wisniewski writes about IR causing blood vessels close to the skin's surface to become visible.
Irakly Shanidze Posted December 11, 2006 Share #19 Posted December 11, 2006 Dear Irakly, I read your wonderful article about the Contax N Digital some time ago (at The Luminous Landscape). I would like to know your opinion about the Leica M8. Great pictures. A pleasure to see them. Best, R. I think it is a bit early to for a substantiated opinion on M8. I will play with it for a bit more and write a review article. Irakly

Joseph Wisniewski writes about IR causing blood vessels close to the skin's surface to become visible. This is all intentional. The pictre was exposed for one second, and three light sources with different color temperatures contributed to the overall palette. Joe (whom I most likely will see tonight) is right. I noticed the phenomenon a couple of years ago when shooting with a Kodak DCS back without an IR filter attached. One of the models was a pale-skinned redhead, and she turned out all magenta
