m9 buffers

The camera M9 having taken 8 photos continuously stops and starts the 'buffer' sequence i.e. only after 8 pictures. The card is a sandisk extreme sdhc 30mb/s. Would the number of photos increase before buffering begins if the card were to ,say, 60mb/s ?

What do you want - tested firmware in due course or buggy firmware right now? I prefer Leica to get it as right as possible to firmware buggering up a perfectly functional camera as it is at the moment, by caving in to customer pressure.

I'm sure you've checked the list of recommended cards in the M9 FAQ on the Leica site?

Stig is correct. Just to rephrase what he said:

We're dealing with two limits: One is the camera's buffer size (8 DNGs), and the other is its write speed. If the card's read speed is higher than the camera's write speed, the camera is the limiting factor and getting a faster card won't help.

Maybe a firmware update will speed up the camera's write speed, but the 8-file limit could only be increased by a hardware change.

I hope that helps.

Guys, the framebuffer is the same if you take compressed/uncompressed RAW pics?

The number of images the buffer holds remains the same--this is hardware. However, what I am implying is that the M9 with its current 1.002 firmware is dealing with SDHC in less than optimal read/write speeds. This is why we are seeing odd/occasional corrupt DNG's, slow format speeds, slow zooming previews on LCD, Sandisk Extreme III cards slower than Ultra II's.

If this is the case, the bottleneck then becomes a firmware issue.

I realize the M9 shooting uncompressed DNG's is pushing almost 4x the megabtyes than M8, but it feels like it should be able to write faster IE: same number of images before you hit the buffer, but less time to clear, or to write to card, image to image.

Hi, sorry just reread your post and didn't realize you were actually asking a question first time around.

Compressed DNG's is the same = 7 shots

However, it only takes aprox 18sec to completely clear the buffer, although the time from when you first hit the buffer until you can take another shot is still 3-4 sec.
