markowich Posted January 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) it seems that i have to revise my comments on the quality of the leica SE 18mm, at least as far as distorsion is concerned. i attach a file which i took with the lens on the M9, not manipulated except converted to jpg in CS4 and downsized. all the lines that are clearly visible should be straight.....pretty ugly distorsion, not only at the image boundary but all the way to the center. i'd love to see how the WATE would have performed there. peter Welcome, dear visitor! adan Posted January 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 25, 2010 Looks pretty much exactly like Leica's published diagram. A nice (well, nice in the sense of clear and effective) real-world example. The chart for the WATE @ 18mm (and all other settings) shows more distortion - of the same type: barrel overcorrected to pincushion. Too bad the old Super-Angulons give red edges. markowich Posted January 25, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted January 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) these are not really worse. you have to measure the distortionbefore you notice it. p
UliWer Posted January 25, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 25, 2010 these are not really worse. you have to measure the distortionbefore you notice it.p Sorry for the bad joke... Though I don't think anybody would be able to measure anything in this street.
D&A Posted January 26, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 26, 2010 In terms of distortion, I wonder how the Zeiss 18mm compares to the Leica 18mm. I already know how shapness (resolution compares between the two). Thanks. Dave (D&A)
brill64 Posted January 26, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 26, 2010 just a thought..have you gone back to check the wall isn't actually built like that? not all modern walls are built absolutely true..

Dave (D&A) The data sheets for the 18mm Super-Elmar says, it has a relative distortion of max. - 2%, the sheet for the Zeiss gives it about -1%. Marty Posted January 26, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 26, 2010 The WATE and all other lenses will perform exactly the same, this is a classical case of sensor distortion!

Seeing distortion in a image, even a supposedly straight brick wall or iron works type wall...often takes a carefully positioned camera (and making sure the subject itself is not distorted. Thats why some posted images that have "some" straight lined objects, don't always show the offending results of distortion and its easy to surmise that a lens doesn't display this characteristic.
