manuelecarlini Posted January 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm new to this forum and I've found a very interesting people talking about Leica equipment. So I'd like to know your opinion about this: I got a fantastic Leica M7 used with 35 cron pre-aspheric, unfortunately I don't have a good scanner to play or store digitally my pictures so the doubt: Should I buy a good scanner or is better to sell the M7 and buy the Leica X1? I have to say that I've got only the 35mm and I'm not going to buy (too expensive for me now) other lenses and only for this reason I'm comparing the M7 to X1. Best regards, Manuele. nhabedi Posted January 25, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 25, 2010 You'll get different replies from different people, that's for sure... My take is that you should definitely keep the M7 and the lens. It's a fantastic combination! As for scanning, that depends on how many rolls of film you're planning to shoot per month and what your scans will be for. Maybe it makes more sense economically to have the films scanned at the local lab where it is developed? Or maybe you should start with a cheap scanner for proofs and web images and have a few really good images scanned by a pro lab with a scanner that's much better than what you would buy anyway? jsrockit Posted January 25, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 25, 2010 Why haven't you thought about the M8 instead of the M7? Also, I'd rather have a camera that fits my workflow than one that doesn't... even if the M7 is nicer than the X1.
Clandrel Posted January 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 25, 2010 Yes. Sell the M7 - Get the M8 - keep the lense!

I agree. Keep the M7, buy a cheap scanner for proofs, and get your special images drum scanned at a pro lab.
regedit Posted January 26, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 26, 2010 sell M7 and buy M9 to keep 35mm as 35 wide.
manuelecarlini Posted January 26, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted January 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) sell M7 and buy M9 to keep 35mm as 35 wide. Of course this would be the best choise if I had almost 4000€ to spend. But now, I haven't this disponibility. Thanks to all for your opinion, I think I'm going to use a little scanner for the web galleries (I'm trying an Epson V100 3200DPI) and wait for the M8.. For the best photos I'll use a prof labs here in Rome (do you know some prof labs in Rome?) bye, Manuele.
Ecaton Posted January 26, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 26, 2010 Yes. Sell the M7 - Get the M8 - keep the lense! Am using the M8 since launch. But recently added a MP and enjoy it even more than the M8. The 35 cron asph is glued to it. You might regret selling the M7 for a M8, shooting film feels somehow different, more satisfying, than digital. But rather than spending some USD 2000 for the X1, I'd buy a used M8. He might, but then he also might feel liberated like I did once I went M8. Seeing the shot after I take it, learning from mistakes intraday instead of after processing the film, the camera feels almost as nice as a film leica, and it's nice to be able to do the whole process in my home... Film is cool, but it is expensive and time consuming to really do it right.

I think it should not cost 4000$ to go from M7 to M8 (or even M8.2) cause the M7 holds rather well its price thus changing the body to _new_ M8 would be around X1 price and of you go for used M8 then it is even cheaper. Cheers!

cheewai_m6 Posted January 27, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 27, 2010 keep m7 and get a film scanner in my opinion. buying m8 will mean you'll need to buy ir filters. your 35mm will be more like a 50mm. no good mr. i also imagine going from m7 to x1 will feel like a downgrade. regedit Posted January 27, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 27, 2010 yep, as I said, the M9 is the answer!
jsrockit Posted January 27, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 27, 2010 i also imagine going from m7 to x1 will feel like a downgrade. Another option could be to sell the M7 and buy a M6 classic and an X1.
wda Posted January 31, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 31, 2010 Manuele, welcome to the Leica Forum! From your second posting it seems that you mainly want scans for web use. In that case, why not get your lab to provide simultaneous scans on disc when your film is processed? No capital outlay! Then, if you want higher resolution scans for large prints, or whatever, order them separately and later from your lab. Low resolution scans suitable for web use are much cheaper and would save you buying a scanner at this stage and the time spent scanning! If you wish to scan a lot of your material later, consider buying a Nikon Coolscan scanner, new or used. But right now keep your M7 and lens and enjoy the best of both worlds. cheewai_m6 Posted February 1, 2010 Share #16 Posted February 1, 2010 Another option could be to sell the M7 and buy a M6 classic and an X1. agreed. i got a classic and it's awesome. i like how the shutter dial doesn't turn the wrong way like on m7 and ttl. i'm going to hate that when i eventually get an m9. manuelecarlini Posted February 1, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted February 1, 2010 I'm thinking about another option: keep the M7 sell an optic and buy an "old used Digital Camera" to play with. The rest will go to the M9 piggy. Maybe an old with-poor-sensor but with-good-lens D2...
nigelb Posted February 1, 2010 Share #18 Posted February 1, 2010 Maybe an old with-poor-sensor but with-good-lens D2... The D2 is rather better than that description. If you haven't already done so, take a look at the pictures on this (long) thread Who knows you may fall in love with it like many of us Nigel

If you haven't already done so, take a look at the pictures on this (long) thread Who knows you may fall in love with it like many of us Nigel I hope so, becouse I've bought a D2 from a Leica Shop in Hamburg for about 500€ with 1 year of warranty. I already used a LC1 and I find it very very nice to use, I'm sure I'll love it. (now my piggy is getting fat!)
