wetworx Posted January 22, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted January 22, 2010 Will an Epson V600 do just as good (or better) for b/w negatives? how about the Epson V700?
StS Posted January 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2010 I have the Quato 5000, which appears to have the same mechanics of the Plustek 7500 but was adapted for Macintosh computers. I see these advantages: Good resolution, tests show the optical resolution is 3500dpi rather than the claimed 5000 The homepage of Monochrom claims it can handle higher optical densities compared to other scanners in this range It is still in production ...and experience these disadvantages: It is very slow. One can get another coffee, while the machine scans a single frame and I already drink too much coffee... Infrared dust reduction does not really work and is very slow. A brush and pressurized air has to do the full job... No automatic feeder Summing up, I use it for single scans giving fully acceptable results for A4 scans. For scanning a complete film or very high resolution requirements, I go to a pro lab, who use either a Noritsu or an Imacon, both are better than everything I need. StS Posted January 24, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2010 I don't have any experience with the Epson, it appears to be the preferred solution for people, wo also do MF scans. Stefan
cheewai_m6 Posted January 24, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2010 i just bought an epson v500 on saturday. and i am extremely happy with it. i looked into plustek 7400 but i was told, and also from research online, that the cheaper plustek scanners only take a digital 'photo' of your negative. where this series of epsons actually scan the neg. i know the v500 isn't the latest out there, but it is recent at least and i think it's quite good. it was AUD$450, not the cheapest, but is a fair price for the city i live in where everything is a rip off. this is a scan from fuji superier 200. i have reduced quite a lot and there is some processing done on lightroom. i scanned at 6400dpi in 48bit colour (i don't know what that means) but it's the highest setting. i scanned to tiff, then edit in lighroom, and export to jpg. the tiff was 238mb. hope this helps. exporting to jpg seemed to have reduced is quality a bit. zeitz Posted January 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2010 David Brooks in the month's Shutterbug (Feb 2010, Page 74, bottom right) recommends Plustek. I hvae the Konica Minolta he mentions, and I have the feed problems he mentions. I wish it would break totally so that I could upgrade to Plustek. tobey bilek Posted January 24, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 24, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Plus tech or Imacon or a drum scanner depending if you are average, wealthy, super rich. A used Nikon coolscan or KM5400 if you know how much use it has had. Otherwise it is like buuying a used car that looks brand new but has no odometer. wetworx Posted January 26, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted January 26, 2010 I spoke with some professional staff at B&H and they ranked the scanners like so : v600 < 7500i < V700/V750 a professional photographer i spoke with mentioned how he planned to just use a macro lens and photograph his more prized negatives himself. the plustek currently has a 50$ mail-in-rebate from B&H this month that I was going to make use of...but i think i'll save my money for the epson when I need it. thanks everyone for the input. I have used the Epson 700 for a few years. I just bought a second one as now my wife & son want to use it all the time. To my eyes, it's by far the best solution within a reasonable price & the system always preforms very well. Make sure to purchase Vuescan as well. A masterful tool. One major difference I find between the Nikons & Epson, is the Nikon over sharpens & has much higher contrast. I like a scan I can manipulate to my preferences, not the scanner's. BTW, Epson has very strong support as well.
jpattison Posted January 27, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 27, 2010 he planned to just use a macro lens and photograph his more prized negatives himself. I have done this, it is much quicker! I have to open the files in Photoshop to invert them, then import them into Lightroom. Lightroom 2 doesn't invert. Does 3 Beta, anyone? John
