markpsf Posted January 21, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have a chance to get a great deal on a used 8.2 that's chrome/silver. Could get one even cheaper that's all black, but the black paint is already coming off the edges. I like all black a bit better but I have a hunch that the paint coming off, even if I can touch it up, will be an ongoing problem. Any thoughts beyond the obvious "personal taste" aspect? Manolo Laguillo Posted January 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 21, 2010 Beyond the fact that I like it much better, chrome is way more robust, can stay under the sun better than black, and is less visible. Yes, this is so because it looks, when chrome, more as an old film camera from the 50's or 60's, and nobody would be interested in it.
Nicoleica Posted January 21, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 21, 2010 My M8 is silver. it's the classic 'M' colour, and I think that it looks nicer, and wears better. But that's just my personal opinion. Whichever you choose, you will have a great camera.
sbaruche Posted January 21, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 21, 2010 I had the same dilemma and ended up having the silver I do not regret it is so nice so classic black will not age as well The chrome sometime even look like grey go for the chrome Sylvain

gravastar Posted January 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The finish of the black chrome M8 seems to wear quite rapidly to a shiny dark brownish yellow color where it is rubbed. The silver chrome ones appear to be similar to the silver chrome of old and are harder wearing. Bob.
markpsf Posted January 21, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted January 21, 2010 I decided I even like the looks better on the silver/chrome one. Great deal and very excited! Mark
jpmac55 Posted January 21, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 21, 2010 I didn't give much thought to the color because I got a good deal on a used black one but like the silver better. Looks good with either color lens. The only advantage for black is being discreet for street photography. I'm sure it doesn't fool to many people though. luigi bertolotti Posted January 21, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 21, 2010 Silver Leicas are always finer, but that's only my opinion... on the contrary, is well known that chrome lenses are sharper and with nicer bokeh...
viramati Posted January 21, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 21, 2010 Silver. They always think it is some old camera from the 60's. Most common comment is "My dad used have one of those"!!
wstotler Posted January 21, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 21, 2010 Silver chrome. * Significantly more durable finish. * Classic look. (Silver = vintage tourist. Black = "pro" shooter.) Only cosmetic issue for me is body/lens color matching. Newer lenses from Leica generally come in black. While this isn't a show stopper, I think black-lens-on-black-body looks better than black-lens-on-chrome-body (and forget about chrome lenses on black body). The chrome-lens-on-chrome-body in a tan Luigi case never goes out of style and looks incredibly good. Good luck and cheers! Will
Maggie_O Posted January 22, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 22, 2010 Chrome + Chrome = HOT! And, in my experience, practically invisible. The only time people ever notice my camera is if I stop to chimp and they're taken aback that I've got a digital camera, instead of an antique. Mark I like to see a bit of wear and tear, it shows usage and adds character. I'd go with the black one. You should see my favorite guitars ... look really beat and I love them that way. Fender even sells artificially aged/distressed versions for 2x the price. If you can get real "aging" go for it. I'd be more careful about the shutter-count. ckone77 Posted January 22, 2010 Share #17 Posted January 22, 2010 Very personal taste question I would say; my M8 is silver, my M7 is black, so it's quite easy, when carrying both bodies
bono0272 Posted January 22, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 22, 2010 I like chrome, it looks antique and is great with chrome lenses. Here is my chrome family. Welcome, dear visitor! mike_j Posted January 22, 2010 Share #19 Posted January 22, 2010 My M8 is black, I much preferred the look of the M6 in silver with antique brown Luigi half cast that I traded in to buy the M8.
markpsf Posted January 22, 2010 Author Share #20 Posted January 22, 2010 I know some of you may just enjoy listing your preferences so if so....carry on. I'm enjoying the comments. But I did make a decision yesterday. The basis was that the seller had one all black and mailed me photos to show that the edges showed wear to the black paint and the finish below showing. I figured that even if I bought an 8.2 that looked perfect, eventually this would happen with normal use. The only reason I leaned towards the all black was thinking that for street shooting it would be less noticed. The more I thought about it though I realized that would be a very minor variable, if at all. Your comments also got me reexamining the traditional style and I decided I'd be happy with it. Additionally, the same dealer had one available at a great price in mint condition. It's on its way! Thanks for all the input. Great forum re helpfulness and professionalism. Feels like a family...a functional one that is. Mark
