Leica 24/2.8 user questions

Hi all,

I've just bought a used 24/2.8 with the latest 6bit coding. I tried a zeiss 25/2.8 for a week but i returned it. The handling of the leica feels much different from the Zeiss. The focus ring feels smooth but not overly damped like the Zeiss. My only worry was regarding the aperture ring. At the the extremes of the settings, I can turn the ring just past the indent but then the ring sits back in the 2.8 setting anticlockwise and 16 clockwise. Do you think this represents play in the aperture ring? I want to make sure I've bought a good copy! Thoughts gratefully recieved from anyone who has used this lens!

Thanks, steve

That is fairly normal for M lenses in my experience, I know it happens on more than one of mine. I don't have my 24/2.8 to hand, but it could very well be one of them :)

I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thanks for the feedback!

Another question if I may? The lens itself is in very good condition and has the bona fide 6 bit coding. Unfortunately the lens came in the original box but without papers. Now, on the box there's a sticker saying that the lens offical UK stock and comes with some "benefits" but there's no paperwork with the lens. My decision to by my M8.2 from a UK dealer was that the Leica Passport was still available to cover the camera. Are there such benefits for the lenses? Would Leica know from the Serial No the age of the lens and when it was purchased? There are other 24/2.8's for sale in various dealers that are slightly cheaper but without the 6bit coding and do state they come with papers etc. But I'm guessing they will be older lenses. My serial no starts with 40413**.

Based on the serial number it is a fairly new lens. If it is sold as new from Leica UK, there should be passport papers in the box for you to fill out and send to Milton Kenes. There were when I bought my 24/2.8 from ffordes in Scotland. If they're missing, talk to your dealer about it. I would think Leica can check if the serial number has been registered by someone else.

I had the same concern once but apparently it isn't a problem at all.

Can i ask, what did you feel was wrong with the handling of the Zeiss 25mm. I am trying to decide between these two lenses. Thanks.

The handling of the Zeiss was different to the Leica in that the focus ring felt more damped and the "bump" on the ring was a bit too small for my liking. The hood was rather fiddly to put on but the fit and finish of the lens was without fault. I liked the aperture ring and it felt more "precise" in its click stops and did not "over adjust" as the Leica did - hence the question in my first post.

The reason why I sent the Zeiss back was that it did not have the flange changed to bring up the 24/35 framelines and so the (hand) coding on the lens did not register. So you could have colour problems at the edges so I understand.

And after reading a few words of wisdom on this site, I thought that my M8.2 deserved Leica glass at this focal length and from my limited shooting since I got the lens, I don't seem to have made a bad choice! :)

Thanks Carl,

I called up Leica UK and from the serial they could deduce that the lens was bought 2 years ago. In the UK, the lens comes with an additional insurance policy like the Leica Passport for cameras but alas, this has expired for my lens.
