I could have posted this on the M8 forum, and may still since it fits both.

The context. Experienced (not sure that I'm advanced"!) amateur). Most of my photography is street shooting in the full sense, mostly candids, but also city and town scapes. I want small, discrete, quiet. My favorite focal length is 35-40mm. 90% of my photos are web postings only. The best ones I print. I want to either move back to a rangefinder (grew up with them) or a retro type quality point and shoot. I hate menu driven settings and feel at home with manual lens setting and camera dials. If money were no object I'd go with the M9. Unfortunately, money is an object.

So choices. X1 (have one on order), used M8.2 and a 28mm lens, or wait and save up for an M9.

Your hit? What do I lose beyond the obvious (full frame) in going with the 8.2? One option is the X1 now and add a lens or two as I can afford them and then finally the M9.

Does that make any sense to you?

Advice appreciated.

Why not an M8? At $2,000 - $2500 for a very nice example, this is a steal of a deal. I just bought one a month ago and love it. I also have an X1 on order, and will likely keep it too, but the M8 is a sweet camera for the $$. The M8.2 cost nearly as much as a X1 and M8 combined.

Why not the Lumix GF1 with the 20mm pancake lens, a Voigtlander adapter for future Leica lens use (the Lumix could serve as a backup for later) and then save for the M9. I sold all my video and photo gear (but kept the Lumix) to get the M9. The M9 is very special and very much fun to use, but the Lumix GF1 is pretty sweet too, pocketable and will be my backup for the future (plus it can take Leica lenses and Lumix lenses).

Well I have and like the GF1 but for me it's apples and oranges re the others.

It's a very good camera for AF use but I'm not crazy about the colors and, more importantly, I like using zone focusing, almost impossible with the GF1.

Thanks tho, a very practical solution...but I'm functioning more

intuitively than practically!

Get a M8

Get a used lens.

If you don't like menu driven adjustments and have RF experience, the M8 is a solution and used, it is a bargain.

Only reason to go to the M9 is if you needed the resolution, or use of wide lenses, or the max in ISO to date, or had the dough. If you are mainly web, you don't really need 18 megapixels, hey. you don't need more than 3.

I have tried the X1 and thought it would not be as easy to use for street shooting without learning how to set the manual focus quickly.

Want to buy mine? send a private message, as I needed the 18mp and wides, and upgraded to the M9
