Help! Bizarre M9 PROBLEM!

Turned my M9 last night at a social function and touched the shutter button to activate; a strange "Whirrr" sound started, sort like if the hard drive or DVD/CD drive on a computer was going bad, sort of like if a motor drive or winder was going bad.

Turned power off but it did not stop. Had to remove battery for it to stop.

Replaced battery and problem persisted, tried 5 or 6 times to no avail.

Finally gave up and set the camera down. After about 10 minutes I turned it on again and it was OK. Took 1/2 dozen photos and it started again.

Set the camera down, waited about 10 minutes and it was fine.

Any ideas?, send it back to Leica? the camera is barely 1 month old!

Thanks.

News update;

Called Leica yesterday AM, and was told that they had never heard of that before, but to send it in and they would try to have it back in a couple of weeks.

Perhaps I should not of have sold my Canon 5D Mark II ?

Steve sorry to hear about your M9 problem. Where are you located, and which Leica service centre did you call?

I recently stupidly dropped my M9 and sent it to Leica Germany for RF readjustment. Leica sent me an email undertaking that the maximum repair time on any M9 is 5 days. They turned mine around in 2 days and I had it back in Africa within 7 days of sending it to Germany. My point is that it's unacceptable, dare I say dismissive of them to tell you a couple of weeks.

If you are in the US it may be worth your while to contact Leica CS in Germany and courier the camera to them rather. If you do go this route make sure that the courier company sorts out re-importation papers for US Customs prior to shipping to Germany. I saved myself a lot of headaches by ensuring this was done with South African Customs, who are an absolute nightmare to deal with! They all try their luck with wanting to charge import duty again; SA customs still jerked me around for 2 days. Thankfully my paperwork was in order for the camera's return from Germany.

I will probably be severely reprimanded by Jaap for saying this :), but that's a well known mechanical problem of the silliest of all camera switches, the M8's main switch, which Leica in their never ending wisdom carried over to the M9 - where it fails just as well as in the M8. :rolleyes:

No- it is probably one of the shutter lever switches failing to engage. I have never heard of a failing main switch though, not a reprimand ;), just interested, did yours fail?

Thank you all.

The M9 went back to Leica in the USA where it was purchased.

I have been Emailing back and forth with them. They keep on asking if I included a note with the body, SN., problem, etc. Even though they received it yeaterday, according to UPS, and signed for!. Tipical right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing!.

I will call them and request a bit of faster service, even though they told me that 2 weeks is rather fast for them. I was going tosend them my 50 f 1. and Tri Elmar E 55 for coding, but they told me a minimun of 8 weeks, possibly longer and at $165.00 per lens I believe. So I sent them in to Don Goldberg at $89.00? each and had them back in a bit over 2 weeks and that is with Christmas in between.

No, mine didn't, but I know two M8 owners whose did. And I seem to remember having read many times on this forum about something failing to engage. I thought it was part of the switch assembly - my error. :)

Thank you all, here's an update;

Spoke with Leica service and they said that they could not duplicate the problem, but did not say as to what they were going to do about it. Got the impression that they were just going to send it back!.

I did mention that I posted the issue on this forum and that a few M8 owners had experienced the same problem, but I got the distinctive impression that they could of cared less!. Suggestions anyone?
