Digilux2/LC1 - 1:1 Format/

Having updated the firmware on my D-Lux4 recently and becoming more partial to the square format it offers, I was wondering whether there is a way to produce 1:1 pics with my LC1, short of cropping the final image...

As I recall from owning a D-Lux 3, all you're doing is cropping.

I'm not sure what the base aspect ratio is on the D-Lux 4. But all but base aspect ratio are created by cropping the image.

But there's no way to shoot 1:1 with the Digilux 2 ...

Even if you could get hold of an Elpro D-69, a close-up add-on lens expressly made for the Digilux 2, at the closest distance of about 15cm you would frame a field of 6x8cm with the zoom set at 90mm (the values come from the booklet that came with mine), at best a close-up just as its name says after all. So even in that case you'd have to crop ...

As an alternative, but just for the record, in the old days we sometimes used an inverted lens on the main one to get to a high enlarging ratio with good results. You need a double threaded ring for this, sort of a filter adapter with male threads on both sides.

Guess this, in theory, could be the only chance to get to a real macro with a D/2-LC1, of course if you can find someone able to use a lathe and mill the adapter, as I think it's unlikely you can find one ready. Could be an interesting DIY project ...

Best.
