glyons Posted January 16, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Leica M8 Terrible LCD (like the 5D MkI - crap), better it just had a histogram. White balance 'aint worth a curse in indoors not great after ISO 320 The battery in the cold temperature reduces quickly mmh what else ??? mmh .... eh .. Now that's out the way. Wonderful camera to operate Love the red LED arrows and dot in the viewfinder for metering, (go this direction to adjust speed or aperture) Total control over exposure simply No face detection, No smile detection and any other disturbing features. I think probably, so far, it makes the best B&W images of any camera I've used. More people friendly than the big mother of a L lens and 5D. I would like if they put the exposure arrows/dot in the wee LCD on top. But that's a minor thing. I'm only getting use to the sharpness - is this real ? I've some nice L lens but they always need a tweak in the post. I haven't figure out, do I like the color output or not, I reckon I need to understand the sensor and the IR/UV thing a bit better to find my color style. Anyway that's my thoughts of the M8 using it for two days so far. I posted some images in the Sports Forum from today's ski race. Gavin

offshore Posted January 16, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2010 I've said this before, and taken all kinds of grief for it, but I still believe one day the M8 will be a classic just as the ugly duckling M5 went from scathing criticism to a highly sought after collectible. My two cents, now fire away.

My two cents, now fire away. I already love mine

danyves Posted January 17, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 17, 2010 Firmware 2.004 makes ISO good up to 640, and good enough even at 1250. LCD is not a TV screen.

That has also been my experience epecially when shooting people. Another personal discovery for me, my Epson 2880 printer ONLY WENT AS FAR AS 13X19, I had issues with that printer and just this weekend upgraded to the Epson 3880 which can print 17X22. I printed an image at about that size taken with the M8 and I was simply amazed, the resolution was excellent, which tells me it can easily handle 16X20 prints. Others had already established this, but this is the first time I actually saw it in front of me which makes me even more excited about making bigger prints with the M8. The M8 remains just as viable as ever. The artificial obsilence established by the market has no bearings on what the M8 can produce in the hands of a half decent photographer. Que Viva La M8!!! piblondin Posted January 18, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 18, 2010 Can someone summarize, in English, the technique?
becker Posted January 19, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 19, 2010 You have to go with DNG, no camera software manipulation no pre exposure manipulation. Except 1250 ASA:) Then You only have to make Your pics with correct ! exposure you have to see the point no arrow. Its better to be a little lighter than to dark. The rest You do in your extern raw software. What now is left of grain you won`t see in Your prints. Try al lttle You will see it works fine. You should use a fast lense o c reg Matt
