jaapv Posted January 19, 2010 Share #21 Posted January 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've tried it myself and it worked fine. If you alter the focus at infinity, you will also alter it at the closer range. That doesn't mean that it will end up perfect at all distances, but if it is off at infinty it is a good indication that the RF is out of alignment, not the lenses. That is correct. Did you adjust it at 1m and 3 m as well then? If it worked fine it was luck -not skill. It is not a good idea to advocate this on the Internet. Makten Posted January 20, 2010 Share #22 Posted January 20, 2010 That is correct. Did you adjust it at 1m and 3 m as well then? If it worked fine it was luck -not skill. It is not a good idea to advocate this on the Internet. It doesn't take skill to turn a tiny screw. But I doubt it was luck, since I've read about several others doing the same with the same result. Which was; perfect focus at all distances within the scale of the lens. So if there's nothing wrong with the linearity calibration (the angle of the lever), of course the infinity calibration will linearly affect focus at the whole range. Now, if something else is off too, you won't get it right. But I can't understand how it could be even worse than it was. Just turn the screw back then or send the camera for calibration. Guest mc_k Posted January 20, 2010 Share #23 Posted January 20, 2010 At least one person damaged the camera doing such an adjustment; technically you are also invalidating your warranty. How did you measure the accuracy at, say, 3 meters?
Makten Posted January 20, 2010 Share #24 Posted January 20, 2010 At least one person damaged the camera doing such an adjustment; technically you are also invalidating your warranty. If Leica can't adjust their cameras properly at the factory, I'm not stupid enough to tell them that I've touched it when leaving it for calibration. Their fault from the beginning and their responsibility. Note that this applies if you've bought the camera new and it misfocuses out of the box. In my case it was an experiment that ended up exactly as I planned. I don't understand how you could damage the camera if you're not very clumsy. I'm fortunately not. How did you measure the accuracy at, say, 3 meters? With my eyes of course. How would you do it?
jaapv Posted January 20, 2010 Share #25 Posted January 20, 2010 By using a reference lens and a target.
sblutter Posted January 22, 2010 Share #26 Posted January 22, 2010 Geez - 40 yrs serious shooting and I've never learned more about focusing - thanks guys! The 5DM2 gave me absolute fits. Neither auto or manual were good enough. Ended up shooting huge focus only brackets. But that was on a tripod in the studio. In the field, forget it. Guess I'll be doing a lot of tests - have about a doz. lenses, uch...

brill64 Posted January 23, 2010 Share #28 Posted January 23, 2010 Did 2 sets of very controlled test tonight, and every lens is 3cm (1.2 inches) front focusing wide open at 1 meter. Waiting on a response from Leica NJ on how to proceed. Not a real happy camper in having to deal with this on a new $7k camera . Hopefully Nikon will come through. especially since all lenses are front focusing by the same amount, i'd have adjusted it myself sorry, i just read a later post about adjusting things yourself..it's a 7k camera after all.. i'd still do it
