Basically testing it in the shop won't get you further than seeing if it works. Essential is to buy at a reliable dealer with guarantee if possible, or from a reliable private seller, without guarantee but about 15-20% under shop price.

i mean, what are the chances that things get swap inside the camera? or sort of like one of those cars that got totaled and got a new body and paint but the inside is pretty much done? sorry for the newbie q's.

If it is a factory refurb it will be marked as such and you would be in luck, as those carry a full factory guarantee. I cannot imagine such a thing being done privately, as there is only one case of anybody outside Leica taking an M8 to pieces and actually rebuilding it in a working condition.
