marcg Posted January 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had thought that there were no drivers for this combo and one had to use Vuescan. In fact when I first tried to install the Nikon software, the drivers wouldn't recognise the scanner and so I carried on with Vuescan. Yestderday, I was fiddling with the device manager and tried to see if there were any up to date Nikon drivers available. I told the wizard to seach for drivers and, blow me, the next thing was that I had warning window telling me that there was an unsigned driver. I told it to go ahead anyway and I now have a fully functioning Nik 5000 using Nikon Scan 4 under windows 7 64bit. Maybe you all know that this can be done - but if you don't, then there's the heads-up. I like Vuescan a lot. But it is a bit lumpy and Nikon's software provides a very much faster workflow. In particular, it does an initial quick scan and produces thumnails of all the images on the strip so that you have a global view of what you have. You can then preview or do a full scan on as many or as few as you like. Vuescan doesn't have a thumbnail feature. You have to do a full preview of each image, you can't do side by side comparison, setting many parameters often requires manual entry of co-ordinates - whereas Nikon is mostly point and click. But the thumbnail display is the big issue for me. It would be nice if someone came up with a direct import module for Lightroom. Wouldn't it be nice to view thumbnails in Lightroom, make any pre-scan adjustments and then click scan. That really would make a difference to workflow. Advertisement Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Hi marcg, Take a look here Windows 7 64bit + Coolscan 5000ed. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chris_tribble Posted January 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 11, 2010 Marc - interesting. I have the 4000ED and had been thinking I'd have to keep it tied to an old XP machine - GREAT news if this will work with Win7 64. I don't use it often, but it continues to be a hugely useful resource when I do need it... Any one out there using the 4000 ED with this OS?
marcg Posted January 11, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 11, 2010 Looking at the driver properties, it says that the driver provider is Nikon, driver version is 4.0.0.0 Not digitally signed (which we know) and the amazing thing is that is that it says that the date of the driver is:- 03/02/2003 !!! wda Posted January 12, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 12, 2010 Marc your posting is timely for me because I am just changing over to a new PC with W7.Thank you very much for sharing the news. I probably would have tried that route, but it is reassuring to read of your experience. (Later note) Marc, having read your referenced link, I notice that there is no mention of W7 (professional version) having the capability to operate an additional "XP Mode". I haven't tried it yet, my new PC is still being set up, but I have it as a fall-back position for older software no longer supported and therefore not capable of operating under 64bit OS. marcg Posted January 12, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted January 12, 2010 The link I posted is just something else which I noticed on the Internet. It didn't use it. My driver just magically installed and the scanner leapt into life using the Nik software. I am still completely surprised because I haven't seen any other references to this anywhere.
