The Classic Camera (London) has got that deal now too: get £700 if you buy an R9 and DMR with the trade in of your existing SLR. Seems like a push before Leica replaces the DMR with something else.

Andy - I see The Classic Camera (London) have a £700 trade in "any SLR " deal for a R9+DMR, but I can't see a similar offer at other big Leica dealers e.g. FFordes. Maybe competition will drive down prices, or mabe not! The best price I've seen is £2999 compared to what seems to be the full price of £3449 for the DMR alone.

Well this is a Leica factory deal and not a store deal. Any authorized Leica dealer will have the rebate progam for you. They simply may not advertise it . This is true here in the states like at B&H it does not show it but if a authorized dealer they would have to honor the program , it comes from the Leica company

Thanks Guy.

Leica's website only refers to the deal in the US, not in Europe (although here in the UK we can go and get taught how to use our new Leica at their UK HQ if we like ;) )

For the rebate program, any SLR or DSLR here in Hong Kong counts around 800 EURO.

With this rebate, the kit set of a brand new R9 + DMR costs around 5400 EURO. Still cheaper than a Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II, if you already owns a number of R lens.

To me, I already get used to that 1.37 crop factor of the DMR. Of course a FF is attractive but I won't change the system by buying a cheaper Canon 5D just for the FF.

It's not the matter of whether it is FF or auto focus if you are using Leica. But I believe Leica will finally launch a FF DSLR, of course not in the near future. You can see, Nikon even has no news of issuing a FF.

Tim Bedsted - I have never heard of the Canon or Nikon you mention. I was enquiring on behalf of my son who would love a DMR but can't afford the current price. Like others he was hoping the price might fall but they seem like gold dust secondhand or are very pricey.

Flatfour,

The Nikon; http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Nikon/nikon_d2x.asp

The Canon: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos1dsmkii.asp

I believe the Canon is about to release a new version hence the mk III

The are both quite pricey:(

I think the problem with the DM-R is the involvement of Imacon, Imacon being mergd with Hassleblad doesn't really give them any fomr of incentive to want the DM-R (An MF combatant) to succeed.

The best value for money right now is probably the Nikon D200:o

I've been wanting a DMR since that very first press conference a coupla years ago. I am gagging pretty hard on the price.

I have two R8's and a dozen or so lenses. I don't shoot film at all any more. ...all digital.

I kept all my R stuff in anticipation of a fairly priced digital module.

D'ya suppose it would make sense for Canon or even Voightlander to make an R mount camera body with an 8mp to 10 mp sensor? Seems like there'd be a very large market of stiffs like me who'd love to leverage their investment in Wetzlar glass, but don't wish to pay the price for the DMR. After all, the DMR component costs nearly double the street price of the new Canon EOS 5D full frame 12.8 mp camera. They could take a page out of the Kodak 14mp book and make a lot of us very happy.

I've been pretty loyal to Leica. ..even visited them once back in the Wetzlar days. But it is increasingly difficult to support their pricing philosophy. I know this is heretical, so please don't flame me too fiercely. ...

Edward - IMHO there are no excuses left for using 3rd party bodies to mount Leica R

lenses ( they were designed for Leica R bodies afterall...). While the price of entry of the DMR may be steep, the unit will most likely outlast any other solution presently on the market and is certainly the best quality pro level digital solution out there.

Edward i am here in Phoenix , anyway you know the sun here in AZ. so i went to the zoo to try out the 280 f4 lens. Check out the Dynamic range here . i shot canon and nikon and nothing comes close to the DR the DMR can handle . These are all handheld shot at f4 in mostly bright sun or in shade with sun

Edward these are processed normal no dodging or burning but as you can see even in the shade how much detail is there without blowing out the highlights.

One more Edward just to show range of tone . i have hundreds of Mexico villages images where the sun is even hotter that will just knock you out with color and detail. We can only hope the M8 is this good. I'm working off my laptop and it is not as color mangaged as the desktop which is in NY for a job i am leaving tommorw to do but hopefully you can get a impression of the DMR
