How to link a M9 with GPS data

Father Christmas gave me an iPhone 3GS and it gives pretty exact GPS reference point..and actually pretty good images also. I would like to use this or whatever to identify where I have taken each shot....does anyone know how to do this?

Ideally I would like to get this data directly into a M9 or M8 perhaps within the Meta data file via the USB port ...but I guess that is a joureny too far. However can this be done in post production?

You'll need two pieces of software.

There's an iPhone app called Trails - trails - Intuitive GPS tracking on the iPhone - this will run on the iPhone and take GPS snapshots of your location.

Trails can then export all the waypoints as a GPX file.

You then need to use some software to take the GPX file and update the M9's DNG files. I have a Mac and an M8 and use a program called HoudahGeo- HoudahGeo - Geocoding for the Mac - this updates the Exif data with the locations. If you use a PC I'm sure there are similar programs available.

There's an extensive tutorial video on the Trails page above that shows what's involved. The video uses iPhoto, but the process is the same if you use Aperture or Lightroom.

One thing is that because it uses the time that the DNG was created at in order to determine the location, both iPhone and camera need to have their time synchronised.

Perhaps I should add that this will work with any digital camera, not just a Leica one.

I you run Trails all day, you will be downloading tons of data, and your battery will not last.

And, Frank, please note the "Reply" button, rather than the "Quote" button.

Thanks

Andy, the data files aren't that large - one from London about a year ago had a lot of waypoints and was around 400k. I think I was recording a waypoint every 5 yards or so.

I'll have a play tomorrow.

The battery is of course potentially an issue, which is why if you were doing this a lot a dedicated geo-tagger would be a better option.

Does Trails work in the background and, for that matter, when the iPhone is on standby?

I'm not sure if it is still available but JOBO used to market a gizmo you can stick in your camera hotshoe and which will record the GPS co-ordinates each time you take a shot.

(Edit: Looks like it is still available. photoGPS. Includes Windows software which should please Frank.)

Geotagging! I would love to see that on the next M!!! Provided it does not make it bigger or thicker than the current models. :D

I wonder if Leica could or has planed such additions to their M. I am thinking of something like the M-winder that can be added to an M9 simply by replacing it with the bottom cover. It would add battery life, Geotagging and even Wifi for downloading you files without the need to remove the memory card. Wouldn't that be something!

Andy, you can switch off the live update of the map so that it just records the waypoints - see below.

I use the Sony GPS stick,

then dump to Macbook pro using Load my Tracks.

then apply GeoTagging to images DNG and jpg using PhotoLinker, which have a very intuitive interface which show exactly where my point are, and permit editing if required.

YES, automatic GeoTagging would be a significant feature in a future M or any leica camera for that matter.? S2.s ?

You mean that this "Sony GPS stick" records your itinerary and the you just pair the shots' time and date and update the DNG files? on a Mac???

I am researching this "stick" right now!

Just got it (the CS3KA)! :D Great tip!

Here is the link... GPS-CS1KA | GPS Unit Kit GPS-CS1KA | Sony | SonyStyle USA

Looking at the link you provided the device appears to be discontinued, and the software is Windows only.

There are other devices available on Amazon...

Amazon.co.uk: geotagging - Electronics & Photo

If you are not in the UK search using "geotagging' on your local Amazon.

The software I mentioned above can then extract the location details and update the DNG or JPEG files.

Frank, has anyone told Steve Jobs to expect nuisance phone calls from someone suggesting Apple develop bellows and a reflex housing for the iPhone?

Good point! I guess that means that you are now planning to disassemble your iphone?

Actually I would prefer that Leica recognise a need for a gizmo that fits the M as an accessory that records GPS data directly onto the Metafile as each image is taken. This has been already suggested on this thread. The accessory could ideally house a second battery for GPS and cold weather usage.

Bo- I'm really interested in this. My iPhone wont work for this as most of the places I travel into in Africa have no mobile phone coverage. In March I'm doing a 3 week trans-Kalahari & Okavango safari ending up in Namibia, it would be great to be able to tag my images.

Briefly, how do you link the GPS data to a specific image?

Regards
