Ok, just picked up an M8, but...

They salesman said it came with the "Passport" warranty, which it appears it does not. (That was a big selling point for me) It does have what looks like a 2-year warranty card. It was $3500, "Display" model. He also said it probably had under 100 actuations, but it actually has just under 2000. I'm assuming leica sends the IR filters when you send in the warranty.

Would you return the camera and shop elsewhere? or??

return it, the average M8 is $2300.

Thanks digitalfx,

I'm just about there. I hope they don't have some nasty restocking or anything.

I feel I was a bit mislead with the "you can run it over with your car Passport" warranty he said it came with, and the "under 100" actuations.

I did find another one at a local dealer for $2800 with < 1000 actuations. I would like to buy local if possible and get a rapport going with a good store. But then again, tax is over 9% here. I may be better off ordering from out of state.

I paid $2300 w/ 500 actuations from a dealer. A "Passport" warranty implies a Leica warranty, but it sounds like your warranty is from the reseller. If you paid w/ a credit card, they will back you up. Demand a full refund.

Can you PM me your dealer? :-)

I purchased it from an authorized local leica dealer. It seemed to be a display model, but with "new in box" everything (warranty registration card, the works).

Still, for $2300, I could put $ into glass (I don't have a lens yet!)

Thanks!

That would be the standard Leica warranty here in the States. The Passport warranty was never offered on the M8 on this side of the "pond".

$3500 was the going rate back in the Fall but some dealers have been cutting that price to clear out their stock. For example, I purchased a new chrome M8 around the end of November for $2800. As to the filters - you request them as part of the on-line registration but it appears to take some time for them to be delivered. I ordered mine six weeks ago and I'm still waiting.

Later,

Johnny

$3500 is a lot of dough for a demo,I paid $2600 for my demo m8,with 2400 clicks last month.mine had the box, etc,I got it from calumet photographic in Chicago(authorized dealer).when I registered it,I got the full warranty.funny thing today,I went to calumet and they had another demo m8, the price was $3500.

Reguarding the filter,I received my filters within 10 days of registering, they were shipped by fedex from solms.

Thank you guys for the info.

I'm about 95% I'm going to return it tomorrow. Hopefully they won't give me any guff and try to do restocking fees or anything weird. I guess worst case I could buy a new lens from them

From what I've been reading, the silver lenses are also better (brass vs aluminum) so I'd like to get a silver body.

Ok, was able to return first thing this AM w/o problems! Will do business with them again for sure (they were great and had no attitude.)

Now to find the right M8 or M8.2 and figure out what first lens :D

You won't be dissapointed with an M8.2! What lens you kick off with will depend on what style of photography you are into. I followed a well trod path and plumped for a 28 (Cron) as its close to a 35mm on the M8. A 28 Elmarit (and 24D flash if you shoot a lot of low light stuff) would be a great starter package. I'm still learning with the 28 Cron, but seeing good progress, and am now getting hungry for a 50 Lux.

Take your time looking for the right camera.
