Hi,

As I announced around June I was going 100% Canon.

Today I sold my last piece of equipment, a Chrome M8. Before I sold a black M8, Cron 35 and 50, Lux 75, Elmarit 90, Elmar 135, Noctilux 1.0, CV 15, 35 and 75, Flash etc...

I have not shot a single pics with and M8 since september and I have not missed it a single second, so it was pointless to keep any gear.

Thanks everybody for all the information and help I received here during 2 and half years.

Best luck to everyone.

Eric

When you get tired of those soft images created by big heavy cameras, you'll be back.

I am afraid not.... I worked with both type of cameras before making up my mind.... I got tired of high noise. I thought about going M9, but seriously a 5000 Euros+ camera that has more noise at 2500 ISO than my 5D MKII at 6400 ISO was not acceptable.

I agree with the camera size but I do not use zoom lense anyway, so although it is bigger and heavier it is still acceptable.

The M8 is a great camera without any doubt and the M9 is probably better but it is surely over hypped for this price.

Anyway, I was warned months ago I would regret it.... and month after this, it has not happened....

Unbelievable. I guess it's different strokes for different folks, but I gave all of my Canon gear to my daughter and wouldn't go back for anything. The 5D and IDMII and all of my L lenses don't come anywhere near a Leica M9 and one lens, or even an M8, for that matter. I've never gotten rid of Leica equipment that I have not regretted later so I'll never sell another Leica camera or lens. Canon you can have. Good luck, but I can't help thinking you will be back later. Just look at those Canon wide-angle files at 100%. Or try taking documentary photos without attracting attention. There's nothing like a Leica M.

Interesting, although I would agree that the somewhat limited high ISO preformance can be irritating & time consuming my main objection of the M8 would be the lack of 80 ISO (or less). If I can avoid using high ISO I will as it has little to offer (for me).

If Leica would give me a free firmware update to get clean files up to ISO 4800 I would install it but I doubt I would use it much.

I just sold off the last of my Nikon glass and so am now committed to the Leica path.

Creative tools of all description are so personal. If you find something magic to see the world through, then IMHO that's what counts in the end.

All power to you and good light.

Mike

What's a pity!

I'm not sure why you would post, on a Leica forum, that you sold all your leica gear and have not missed it since September? But, good luck to you and I hope you find happiness with your art.

I bought my wife a 5d2 last year and I know that Canon makes cool stuff. I pick it up now and then and I understand the sirens call. It is amazing technology. And, the 24-70/2.8 is a nice(but heavy) lens. I feel lucky to have access to both systems. But, my artistic soul resides with the RF.

Good luck, and please, stop in and post what you think about your new system.

I do think that I take pictures differently from what other Reflex users do thanks to my two and half years using exclusively rangefinders.

I use only prime lenses on my 5D MKII. 35mm, 50mm and 85mm and yes they are bigger and heavier.

I think M cameras are wonderful tools but they do not cover all the different situation I meet professionally. If the price was not so high I would probably have kept one M8 body and a 35mm but 2009 economical crisis decided differently.

When I say I do not miss my M8 it is because there was not a single shot I did with my M8 that I was not able to do with my 5D MKII, the other way around is not true.

I took 25000 pics on one body and 60000 pics on the other body..... so I do think I know what I speak about regarding the use of the M8

I wish Leica would understand that having the best lenses is NOT enough to justify making such a high priced body. The M9 should have been THE best range finder ever that would technically compete with Canon and Nikon. So the choice would only be based on a way of making picture not on results.

Leica made its name years ago on available light shooting... it is ridiculous that a 600 US$ Nikon 5000 at 3200 ISO has less noise than the M9 at 2500 ISO.

It is unaccepable that Leica "sold" us the necessity of an M8 upgraded saphire LCD screen and then do not fit it on the M9, the removal of the little top plate lcd screen is also something wrong in my opinion. They explain they did it so the final price would be acceptable.... non sense, they should at least leave it as an option and anyway saying this is admiting that they cannot compete with Canon and Nikon.

If the M9 would have met my spec expectations I would probably have sold one of my M8 and go for one M9.

For daylight social works, the M8/M9 is surely the best camera I ever used.... but does this cover enough of my work to justify the price tag? surely not.

I honnestly think that Leica should realise that they are not prepared to offer a reasonably priced professional tool, I wish they would team up with Nikon or Canon and realease an electronically better made camera.

Anyway, I am not trying to convince anyone, just explaning my decision for a professional user. Most people leave and never come back to say if they regret there move or not. This is why I did.

Thanks to all.

Bye

We will miss shots like naughty noctilux, nude breakfast, high heel and back to the workshop. Maybe you could sometimes use a Leica lens on your new body? :)

Cheers,

Andy

LOL I could get a R 50mm prime lens..... that's a good idea, I'll think about it :-)
