eleskin Posted January 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am just wondering, what were the production numbers on the Noctilux, both f1.0, and the new one f.95? I am curious as to how many per year Leica actually makes. Also, are there any videos on a Noctilux being made. That would be interesting to se, especially the platinum mold they use for the lens elements!
Advertisement Posted January 9, 2010 Posted January 9, 2010 Hi eleskin, Take a look here Noctilux f1.0 and .95, how many are made each year?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
treeplanter Posted January 10, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2010 To my knowledge, Leica hasn't released production figures for current-production lenses. Just a guess on my part, but with a price tag of about $10,000 USD, I suspect that Leica will produce only a couple hundred of the 50/0.95 each year. There is a video, someplace, of Leica building a lens. Not sure if it's the 50/0.95, but it's still interesting to watch. Jim B.
Chuck Albertson Posted January 15, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 15, 2010 They're made in batches, though I don't know how big the batches are. They aren't making the f/1.0 any more. The big bottleneck is the special glass they use for one of the elements---after it's cooked, it takes about 18 months to be gradually cooled so that the glass doesn't get stressed. This particular element also accounts for much of the weight of the lens.
