h00ligan Posted January 4, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a photography newbie. I know nothing about anything. I really want this camera so badly and I couldn't articulate why beyond what's already in this forum. Is there rehab for Leica addicted? Something about this camera just screams - buy me - despite all of the negative hype. I'll probably break down and buy it - returning my d'lux 4 and relying on an old rebel xt - instead of doing the responsible thing and buying lenses for said rebel. Just some thoughts from a non critical newcomer with no vested interest in loving or hating. This camera appeals to me, and I am not sure I can tell you why beyond 'it does'. So I guess Leica has some target market in mind....

So I guess Leica has some target market in mind.... before taking the plunge ... ask yourself a simple question ... are you okay to have a camera with a prime lens (i.e. no zoom)? cos I have friends regret buying the GR-D series because of that ... just my 2 cents
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 4, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 4, 2010 Edward, Well a lot of us like to work with something like a 35mm, so you are not going to be in trouble with the X1. You can't go entirely wrong with a good fixed lens. Though there might be more in-expensive ways of getting started with rangefinders. .
h00ligan Posted January 4, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted January 4, 2010 such as? and yes, i think i'm fine with a fast prime. I still have tele on the rebel (yah only 8 mp but i have a decent lens) and will eventually kit it up a bit.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 4, 2010 OK so I spoke a little quickly. the X1 is not a rangefinder. It is a very good digital camera with one good lens. A better priced place to start might be the D-lux4, this camera have a zoom and will give you a bit more options when getting into photography.? The thing which sets apart the X1 is the large sensor, it will give you more shallow depth of focus, so this give the camera a look closer to the M8 than the D-lux4, with a smooth background and image, however, you are going to also be more frustrated with more pictures with "almost" focus, that is the result of the shallow focus from the bigger sensor. . h00ligan Posted January 4, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted January 4, 2010 I bought the Dlux 4 and am thinking of returning it for an X1....
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 4, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 4, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Edward, OK so then you already know what it is. :-) Set the D-lux to roughly 35mm and leave the zoom there, that is what you get from the x1, no zoom, BUT creamier image quality.. as long as you can do the price, and understand what the camera is... you are going to end up with a very interesting little camera, and likely some great shots in the process. . Not all decisions need a purely rational basis. Just bought a Leica MP, simply because I wanted one. So go for it.

regedit Posted January 4, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 4, 2010 Leica have clever product designers. IMHO they create the ultimate camera for an enthusiastic photographer and I'll try to explain why: - put a bigger sensor that creates better quality images over d-lux4 but creates restriction by introducing fixed lens. 35mm seems perfect balance but they didn't manage to get at f2.0 because of form factor. This is a excellent enthusiastic lens that will consider 2.8 fast enough. Both amateurs and pro will be not delighted (pro because is not fast enough and amateurs because lack of zoom) but who cares, this is not for them! - emphasis the use of manual controls (way better than d-lux4) which is a desire for a enthusiast, a must for a pro and a 0 for an amateur. Except the focus, of course, but manual focus is the last challenge of the enthusiastic photographer to go pro. - the look is much more of M than d-lux which brings the owner into another class - another desire of the enthusiastic class. - maintain the form factor to almost pocketable, and this is another big plus for an enthusiastic which need to have the camera always with him but don't feel it as a luggage. - get away from any Pana/Leica line and create the feeling of true Leica camera philosophy that makes smile any Leica wanna be photographer. By mixing this, they create a great sentimental product, with decent specs and value for money as any other Leica product has. It's a very niche product but with a remarkable potential. If you see a Hollywood star with a M around his neck you'll tell yourself, c'mon what a snob but with an X1 will be a very different story. Leica opens a niche with d-lux and now tries to stabilize and make it more loyal to the Leica brand and values. I'm telling this because I'm consider myself as a enthusiastic class photographer and I also found a lot of desire for this camera. But for nothing in the world I will not sacrifice the d-lux to get X1 because d-lux have some strengths (or let's say field of applications) over X1 like HD video. I just want them both! Why? I mean, a hollywood star could be a great photographer as well as an actor no?
regedit Posted January 4, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 4, 2010 of course! ... it's just a paralel regard their show off inclination. from my knowledge Brad Pitt is quite a Leica fan, but I didn't see him on this forum
jsrockit Posted January 4, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 4, 2010 I see. To the OP, I think it is a safe buy. It will be a great camera despite all of its "short comings"... you'll have fun with it.

So I guess Leica has some target market in mind.... The guy who sold me my first Leica (M6), gave me some good advice: "Never be in a hurry to buy anything". It's the hurrying that leaves you with regret, not the timing of your purchase... so if you feel you are hurrying - I suggest you wait a little... after all - the camera isn't suddenly going to disappear
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 4, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 4, 2010 Edward, Since you are pretty much understanding the X1, as others are saying, take your time, its not going away. Besides, maybe you need to take a long hard look at a M8 with a used 28 elmarit..? Just saying... .
h00ligan Posted January 4, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted January 4, 2010 You all make some good points. I want planning on putting a deposit on it just yet . As far as the m8 that's beyond my budget @ what $4500?
jsrockit Posted January 4, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 4, 2010 Besides, maybe you need to take a long hard look at a M8 with a used 28 elmarit..? That's almost twice as much cash though... though also twice as nice!
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 4, 2010 Share #19 Posted January 4, 2010 Well I meant a USED one... secondhand elmarit and M8 would creep in around 3k ish. naturally that would just be a warm up exercise for the M9 and the new 2010 35 lux which he eventually would crave if following this path. .
