egibaud Posted December 7, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, After reading so many times that Leica users' favorite focal is 35mm I have the following question. People who like fast lenses could use the 35mm summilux 1.4... but now for the equivalent focal the fastest lens is the 28mm Summicron 2.0 so they can have a similar angle. Any idea if Leica is planning to build a 28mm Summilux 1.4? Same question for 50mm Notilux fans, any idea if Leica will build a 35mm Notilux ? I think this information would be very useful for many of us who want to buy a couple of lenses. If it is likely to have a 28mm summilux in a near future, I'd rather get the cheaper Elmarit 28mm and use it until there is a summilux instead of buying a summicron now. Advertisement Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 Hi egibaud, Take a look here New Leica lenses for M8 1.33 crop? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
j. borger Posted December 7, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 7, 2006 CV already makes a 35 1.2 (Nokton) .. but it is large for a 35!!! For the Noctilux ... i think the extra reach by the cropfactor is a pre .. the lens only focusses down to 1m so with the crop factor you can get tighter portraits, you can impossible get on film (unless you crop yourself afterwards of course:) ). I wonder if i had bought a Noctilux at all if it had been a 35/1.0 .. and thus a real 50/1.0 on the M8?
thomasl.se Posted December 7, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 7, 2006 Not sure about the size, weight and quality of a 28/1.4. Consider it would be the workhorse lens for many who buys it. But if it's designed suboptimized for corner sharpness in favour of overall quality otherwise, maybe it's highly viable with the M8 since the corners are cropped. Disclaimer: I don't really know the ifs and buts of lens design either
tom0511 Posted December 7, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 7, 2006 would be nice but I dont think it will happen in the near future. I would think that one has to decide if one can lieve with the somewhat slower WA lenses or not.

Disclaimer: I don't really know the ifs and buts of lens design either Making a 28mm f:1.4 to cover the M8 format is no more difficult than making the 35mm f:1.4 In fact, it's the same, taking exception for the slight difference in field of view. But if Leica were to make an f:1.4 lens to cover the exact field of view covered by the 35 on the 35mm format, it would be just a scaled down version of the exact same lens, no more nor no less difficult to make. If lenses were like sweaters you could just toss the 35 into a clothes dryer and you'd be done. A smaller format 28mm lens at f:1.4 would be much easier to make than a 28mm f:1.4 covering the 35mm format, since the latter would have a much wider field of view. It would be a wider angle lens, in other words.
