Advertisement Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 Hi h00ligan, Take a look here Leica D-Lux 4 and Canon S90. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
kalina Posted January 5, 2010 Author Share #22 Posted January 5, 2010 Thanks Kalina - the last one seems the most natural to my completely untrained eye. Is that the canon the? They're all from the Canon S90. I just wanted to show more of how well the S90 handles low light as well as flash. My previous Canon, an SD550, handled flesh tones just as well as the S90. The S90 pics are very sharp compared to my SD550 pics which look soft by comparison. The DL4 takes sharper pictures because of its lens but it does so only in daytime scenarios. h00ligan Posted January 5, 2010 Share #23 Posted January 5, 2010 Oh I see, wonder what it was about the last photo that made it stand out to me. A couple of the shots looked overly red on the skin tone.
kalina Posted January 5, 2010 Author Share #24 Posted January 5, 2010 Oh I see, wonder what it was about the last photo that made it stand out to me. A couple of the shots looked overly red on the skin tone. The previous two were taken without flash. I wanted to show the difference between no flash and flash pics on the S90. Even with no flash, the white balance of the S90 is on par or better than the DL4. In fact, the DL4 pics would tend to look softer. This may have something to do with the ISO limits of each camera. h00ligan Posted January 5, 2010 Share #25 Posted January 5, 2010 well thanks for all of the information, sorry i was so obtuse! You are right, they certainly seem to be doing something right with the flash on that cam. FWIW I just recommended that cam a few days ago to a friend - instead of the DL4 or LX3. Reasons were - lenscap, pocketability, I'm glad to see flash photog appears better as well - because he will be using the flash a LOT.
howaboutthat Posted January 7, 2010 Share #26 Posted January 7, 2010 Can you not adjust the intensity of the DL-4's flash?
kalina Posted January 7, 2010 Author Share #27 Posted January 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can you not adjust the intensity of the DL-4's flash? Yes, but the white balance is still off. If you can capture a picture using the DL4's flash with warm flesh tones like the last picture in my message that had the four pictures of me, then please show us. I certainly won't believe it's possible.
kalina Posted January 8, 2010 Author Share #28 Posted January 8, 2010 So brass tax, which one, were you only allowed one? I guess I finally answered the question by putting my DL4 on ebay. I will miss it. I still have my M8 and goodies to play with.
h00ligan Posted January 8, 2010 Share #29 Posted January 8, 2010 Thanks for the update - yes an m8 should make it a bit easier!!
jsrockit Posted January 8, 2010 Share #30 Posted January 8, 2010 I guess I finally answered the question by putting my DL4 on ebay. I will miss it. I still have my M8 and goodies to play with. Wow, you seemed to love that camera not too long ago... but I understand that love em and leave em mentality when it comes to tools.
kalina Posted January 8, 2010 Author Share #31 Posted January 8, 2010 Wow, you seemed to love that camera not too long ago... but I understand that love em and leave em mentality when it comes to tools. I still love the DL4, but, yes, sometimes something else comes along that has certain things that you like that the old thing doesn't. It's so easy to carry the S90 around. I'll admit I'll miss the hot shoe, but the SD-24 flash never worked quite to my liking with it. For daytime photography, no compact camera beats the DL4. For nighttime photography, which is what I mostly do, the S90 is probably the best compact camera for that. Money calls, though, and bills need to be paid! I'm glad my DL4's value was preserved. Weird how my DL4 sold within two hours.
usayit Posted January 10, 2010 Share #32 Posted January 10, 2010 btw Kalina, Something I posted in this thread that should be of interest to you in regards to flash + P&S. Good news is that no hotshoe is required: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/109987-built-flashes-suck-2.html ..... I shoot with an LX3... yes most on board flashes tend to be PITA. I've gotten fairly good results with the pairing the LX3 with the Metz 28 CS-2. Its an optical slave so you'll have to consider issues with other flashes. For a small flash, it is packed with lots of features. One of my custom profiles are set specifically for use with the MEtz 28 CS-2. The flash is set to A mode and has already been configured to deal with the preflash. My profile for use with flash: ISO 200 Aperture set to f/2.8 Aperture priority (I let the camera decide exposure for background subjects) EV set to -1 (background subjects will be approx -1 EV from foreground exposed via flash) Flash EV set to -2 (I want most of my flash exposure from the Metz CS-2 and not the onboard flash) Flash is forced on (required to trip the Metz 28 CS-2) WB set to flash. I usually have the camera in my right hand and the CS-2 in my left extended over up high. You can even set it down or mount on camera. It also works effectively on my P&S TZ5 but I set the flash to "easy" mode, -1.5EV (on camera), and adjust with +/- as the TZ5 doesn't allow for as much control. The only disadvantage... again... other flashes will set it off. [EDIT] The other disadvantage is that the flash has diffusers that is easily lost. I have yet to find a source for replacements. btw.. here's a sample frame when I was playing around with the CS-2 for the first time: http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL262/1501137/15679162/380236936.jpg ...... Enjoy your S90.
