M9 Shutter fault

The things happened in last night when my friends come for celebrating the new year. I set the switch to S (single shot mode) and choose the Discr. & Soft function, the “Attention shutter fault” message displayed on the screen when I pressed the shutter during shutter recocking, then the camera became totally dead until I removed the battery and put it back again. Unfortunately, the “Attention shutter fault” message displayed every time when I tried to take further shots. I removed the battery and wait overnight by the suggestion of this forum. Unfortunately this doesn’t work.

This brand new M9 just arrived for less than one month and took 673 shots only.

Could anybody give me further suggestions

Three days without the battery will drain the internal battery that keeps the clock running. Since it's a long weekend, you might want to try that, but shutter faults due to just getting timing wrong have been cleared with a brief battery removal since firmware 2.0x on the M8, so I suspect you may have a more serious problem. Take a look at the front of the shutter by removing the lens and see if there is apparent damage. The store and Leica Solms should hear about this.

Sorry this has happened to you.

edit: Here's a slight hope: There have been reports of cameras circulating with beta test firmware and a new firmware release is believed to be imminent. Perhaps your store has a copy. The first problems to surface with the M9 were shutter timing issues, so those were probably the first issues worked on and hopefully resolved. So you may want to see if new firmware is available and can fix the problem without losing the camera for a month at the factory.

Thank you very much.

There is no visible damage on the surface of the shutter.

I will bring the camera to my dealer on Monday

To Shootist :

" Have you taken it off Discrete and Soft Releases???""

Hi All,

First, I'm sorryto hear of those who's cameras have developed the issue just described.

I have a question regarding this. Just as putting any of the M8's or M9's into both "Continuous" & "Discrete" simultaniously can cause serious issues.....is it established yet if putting the M9 into "Soft" & "Discrete" at the same time also an issue (whether in Single or continuous modes)? Logically it wouldn't sound like there would be any conflict with "Soft" and "Discrete", but from the postings in this thread, it may appear this combination may lead to issues. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I posted briefly on M9 delivery thread bout my shutter fault. I also have an M8 & therefore quite familiar with the camera. Never had a shutter fault with the M8 but unfortunately received my Black M9 yesterday and after 1 picture received the error. New card, lenses & battery charge did not Help. For curiosity I tried the sensor cleaning function & the shutter did not move. When turning on camera & pressing shutter release, one hears a few clicking sound followed by the shutter fault error on LCD. Shutter set to standard mode .All other functions on camerawork(set, menu). I must say after having many cameras from the F100, D1-3x Nikons & M8, I have never had a malfunction, so maybe I was due ?. Just frustrating after having waited almost 4 months for the camera. At the dealer now, they will contact me next week after contacting their Leica rep.I didn't register the camera perhaps hoping I might just get a new camera,as my confidence in this one is a bit low.

I hope Leica can clarify this issue completly, this shutter fault thing makes the cam dead. My friend experience that when traveling abroad, her only M8 body, suddenly there is a message "shutter fault default" then it ruins the rest of the trip.

I expect Leica can create some firmware algorythm that makes the cam still functioning.
