Googaliser Posted December 31, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I loved this focal length/aperture on my D3 - saw a lot of use - always wide open. Great for available-light social situations right in amongst the action. I can't seem to get on with 24mm in quite the same way and have thus ruled out the 24 'Lux on a cost divided by likely usage basis. I'm curious to see who else would like the extra stop at this focal length over the 28mm 'cron. Any 'rumours' of an impending 28mm Lux' ? (for what they are worth). Thanks in advance for any comments
Advertisement Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Hi Googaliser, Take a look here Who would buy a 28mm Summilux ? [for M9]. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
doublep Posted December 31, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 31, 2009 I agree with you - I find the 24 'Lux very good - but a bit too heavy for my taste. I would be interested in a 28 'Lux if it could be somewhat similar to a 35 'Lux in weight and size... But perhaps I'm dreaming...
Bo_Lorentzen Posted December 31, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 31, 2009 At a reasonable size - I would buy one. .

neli Posted December 31, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 31, 2009 yes, same here, if it was similar to the 35 lux. only asph. with floating element though. still reluctant to sell my 28/1.4 though i picked up my D700 with 28/1.4 last night for cleaning and nearly dropped it cause of the weight. I used to think of that as my light combo. sheesh. best cornelius
batmobile Posted December 31, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 31, 2009 i'd potentially be interested (for film!) but think a 28 f2 cron is probably ample for my needs. If I were to get one it would be instead of a 35 1.4; however, in all likelihood I will keep my eye out for the new 35 asph lux as this is my 'from my cold dead hands' focal length. Thanks in advance for any comments No, 28mm is not a focal length I like. I have two 24mm M (the summilux and elmarit) and will wait for the new 35mm summilux. gwelland Posted December 31, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 31, 2009 Now I might have given my right arm to buy one for the M8 had it been available (it was THE missing lens IMHO for the cropped sensor) but not quite so useful for the M9. I suspect it would also end up being another $6k lens too if it were to be made.
Jager Posted December 31, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 31, 2009 Depends on size and weight. I almost always go for the fastest lens in a given focal length. And so even though I love my 28 Cron, a Lux would be very welcomed. That all said, I don't expect the 28 FL to get nearly the same (yeoman) work that it did on my M8. I'm back to the 35 as my wideangle of choice on my M9.
pgk Posted December 31, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 31, 2009 It would be VERY tempting lens!
wlaidlaw Posted December 31, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 31, 2009 I keep meaning to go down to my local Leica dealer to make sure I am at #1 in their queue for a 28 Lux. I know from using my Tri-Elmar that it sits at 28mm for about 75% of the time, so I am sure I would use a 28 Lux a lot. I hope that Leica could make it just a touch smaller than the 24 Lux, although they may want to use the same barrel for the sake of economy of manufacture. I also hope that the colour fringing that seems to be affecting both the 21 and 24 Lux on the M9, is a solved problem, either optically or in firmware by the time of release. lars_bergquist Posted December 31, 2009 Share #12 Posted December 31, 2009 My own answer is, No. 28mm was not a focal length I found interesting or useful on film, and now when I have sold my M8, I have little use for my 28 Summicron. I will probably sell it. On the other hand, I have put myself in line for the first v.2 Summilux-M 1:1.4/35mm ASPH to reach this neck of the woods. (I do count on hearing that lens announced during 2010.) All this is totally subjective of course. It all depends on your way of seeing, as long as there are no professional (read: economical) imperatives. But while I love 24/25mm lenses, 28 is really not for me. jonoslack Posted December 31, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 31, 2009 Not I. I love my 28 'cron - great lens, of course, the extra speed would sometimes be nice, but not as a swap for what would be: 1. lots of money (LOTS0 2. a much heavier lens. Nikkor AIS Posted December 31, 2009 Share #14 Posted December 31, 2009 Im also thinking about buying 28 Summilux only I wish it was F 1.4 like my Nikkor 28 1.4 D AF:p. Its kind of strange to me that lecia has the F 1.4 (21, 24, 35) but not a 28 1.4. Its such a great focal length, not to wide not to short. It's just right. Im still interested in getting the 2.0 version of the Lecia 28 and would love to see some sample images on the M9. gregory
novice9 Posted December 31, 2009 Share #15 Posted December 31, 2009 Seems like it might make sense for Leica to introduce a new 28/35 lux pair, sort of the way they did with the 21/24 lux pair. I am loving the new 24 Lux, rarely comes off the camera these days. Also have the 35 lux asph, which I love (no focus shift problems for me). Hard to see needing a fast 28 given my current line up, but i would have never thought i would consider a 21 lux after buying the 24, but i am finding the speed at 24 so wonderful i'm starting to conceive of some pretty interesting uses for the speed at 21, so who knows. Having said all of that, what I'd REALLY like is an asph 1.4 portrait lense (ie, a 75 lux).
marknorton Posted December 31, 2009 Share #16 Posted December 31, 2009 There's certainly a case for a 28mm Summilux given 28mm is the widest the M9 finder supports. I'd like to see Leica move away from compulsively filling in every position in the speed/focal length matrix - right now, we have 2 18's, 3 21's, 3 24's, 2 28's, 3 35's, 4 50's, 2 75's and 3 90's which is probably enough, even if the 35mm Summilux is a bit of a problem child. It's not clear that any new lens will carve out much in the way of new sales, instead just stealing sales from one of the nearby lenses. Instead, I'd like to see Leica revisit the Tri-Elmar concept - a wider focal length range and faster - which would add new interest and flexibility within the lens range. Artichoke Posted December 31, 2009 Share #17 Posted December 31, 2009 I can live with this focal length & even find it useful, though it is a "tweener" f2 is sufficiently fast for most purposes & there are frame lines available for it in the M9's viewfinder it is small which is a HUGE advantage and it is optically among the very best Leica ever designed
wattsy Posted December 31, 2009 Share #18 Posted December 31, 2009 It's not clear that any new lens will carve out much in the way of new sales, instead just stealing sales from one of the nearby lenses. I'm not so sure about that. Leica has a core fanbase who will religiously upgrade. I agree with your point that Leica seems to have a large enough range as it is. Maybe they should concentrate on building the ones that many customers are waiting patiently for (e.g the 50/F1.4) before expanding the range even further? Going back to the OP's question, I have no interest in a 28/F1.4 - the 28/F2 is more than fast and sharp enough for me. The only lens that would interest me in the near future would be a 35/F1.0 (provided it was as smooth focussing as my 35 Summilux and not like the 50/F0.95 which I recently ordered but turned down when I went to pick it up in the shop). Nikkor AIS Posted December 31, 2009 Share #19 Posted December 31, 2009 Tweener Thats funny. Anybody got any 28 f2.0 shots with the M9? gregory
marknorton Posted December 31, 2009 Share #20 Posted December 31, 2009 Im also thinking about buying 28 Summilux only I wish it was F 1.4 like my Nikkor 28 1.4 D AF It was that Nikon lens which wowed me when I first tried Nikon FF, not so much the IQ which even the most die-hard Nikon fan will admit is no more than adequate in the corners, but the combination of angle of view and speed, a bit like the 21/24 Summiluxes on the M. So I would like a 28/1.4, especially if it is somewhat smaller that the other two.
