M9 became useless tonight

I have this problem all the time but it has nothing to do with Leica. Those stupid SD cards with slide feature to lock or unlock are unusable! When I try to put them in my laptop reader, the slide always moves to lock. When I try to put them in my cameras, M8 or M9, the slide moves to lock. It's just way too easy to move. I get tiny, tiny pieces of tape and tape the slide to unlock but you have to be very careful or the tape gets stuck and also causes problems. I much prefer to use older cards without the lock/unlock slide feature. I've never had a problem with those.

Tina, provided that you never want to lock the card again here's what you can do:

If you set the tab firmly to the unlocked position and examine the edge of the card with a magnifying glass (or Leica lens) you will see there is a thin slot that the tab slides in. The objective is to block the slot preventing the tab from sliding to the locked position.

One of the best materials to use is the slow hardening (strong) Araladite two part epoxy resin adhesive that you can get from a hardware store. Don't use the rapid setting type, it doesn't flow when warmed and sets too quickly. You only need a very very small amount of mixed resin, just enough on the end of a needle to put on or in the slot. If you now carefully warm the card with a convector heater or hair dryer the resin will melt and be drawn into the slot by surface tension. There should be little or no excess resin outside of the slot. Leave the card in a warm place for 24hrs to allow the resin to fully set before using.

ETA: Mix a reasonable amount of the resin and hardener so that it's easy to get equal quantities of each, but you only need a small amount to put in the card slot. After the 24hr hardening period check that the resin has hardened and isn't sticky. You don't want that in your Leica! If it is sticky you can probably remove it with methyl (meths) or isopropyl alcohol.

That's not the issue here. This problem happens with the card clearly unlocked, and only on the Leica M8 in my case. Every other camera I have works fine with the same size SD cards including my Digilux 2.

  • 2 weeks later...

Brainiac,

I heard from Leica today and my M8 will be repaired which means they have detected a problem with the camera giving me the "Card Locked" message when the card is not locked and fully functional. This time the repair will include a replacement part. It's scheduled to come back in March. The good news is that they are treating it as a warranty repair.

Maybe I am missing something but instead of Gravastar's epoxy solution, why not make sure the slider is in the unlocked position and then snip off the tab so it cant get caught on something and slide up to "locked"?

I get the occasional card locked message, but today I started getting a new one: Card Full.

At the time, it was a newly-formatted (this morning) card that I have filled-up and then reformatted perhaps four or five times -- Sandisk Ultra II, 16bg. I have seen the error more than once today both before after pulling out the card and the battery while on the street.

The card wasn't even .25 full at the time. Has anyone else seen this error?

At first thought that seems like a neater solution. It may be possible to cut the tab off with a sharp knife or razor blade. What I don't know though is what happens to the switch mechanism if the remainder of the tab inside the case falls further inside. It may disturb the contacts. I don't have a scrap card to open and find out.

I have two M9s. They both lock up. I have to remove the battery to reset. I assume Leica knows this is a major issue and is going to correct it with a firmware update.

It is a real problem.

I've had a few very few M9 lockups. The only one I've been able to easily reproduce is if you use the "delete all" function while viewing a magnified image. That locks the camera every time. Other very infrequent lockups have been of unknown origin, for example the camera would not power on and required a battery removal.

I have some 1GB ATP cards which work OK in other cameras including the M8 but are not recognized by the M9, even after formatting in the PC. I think I had a similar problem with several new Transcend 16GB Class 6 cards which were not recognized by the camera unless they were first formatted in the PC. Since then they have been faultless.
