Guest malland Posted March 7, 2010 Share #61 Posted March 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mitch- what if the M9 you got was flawless (well as flawless as an M9 could be)? Would you still feel the same about the Ricoh and selling your M9? I absolutely love my M9, with it's flaws and quirks and limitations and it's the first camera I'll grab in most situations. I might feel the same way as you if I had the problems you had but I can't imagine a Ricoh or GF1 or dslr being as much fun as this with the resulting quality like nothing I've ever used. I've enjoyed your pictures and you do well with the Leicas. I hope you're happy with your decision and not caught up in the emotion at the moment (I've been there many times). There are so many more people out there with no problem M9's than with- sorry it had to be you. Good luck and come back soon. The honest answer is that I don't know what my answer would have beeb, as, one the one hand, the file quality is great while, on the other hand, the inadequate brightness in the frame lines in the viewfinder was a big issue for me — and Leica never recognised this problem. As Charles mentions above that he did not have this problem I don't know whether this was a problem with my particular camera, but it certainly was a big issue for me. —Mitch/Paknampran Barrier

Guest malland Posted March 7, 2010 Share #62 Posted March 7, 2010 Mitch were you surprised to get you cash back ? Do you think that Leica Service are smarter than you gave them credit for and spotted a scam whereby they provide a new in the box M9 and you sell it for MORE than you paid ? Don't blame you Bitch, but those guys have gone up in my estimation... Charming! I'm not sure that a post like this — there's always one isn't there? — deserves a response, but I only started thinking about selling the camera when Leica Service started telling me that there was no problem with the camera but that it was a Lightroom issue. If that makes them go up in your estimation, so be it. In any case, I was not seeking to make money on the camera and the buyer basically accepted that the camera was new. A completely new camera in Bangkok that was not from a dealer probably would have sold for about the same as I sold it for, based on the price in Hong Kong plus the cost of going there and back. I say "probably" because I'm not in the business of buying and selling cameras. —Mitch/Paknampran Scratching the Surface©
ho_co Posted March 8, 2010 Share #63 Posted March 8, 2010 ... the inadequate brightness in the frame lines in the viewfinder was a big issue for me — and Leica never recognised this problem. ... Mitch, thanks for keeping us posted. I'm sorry about your disappointment, but if the frameline brightness is inadequate, so be it. When I inquired here about dimmer framelines in the M8, others on the forum responded that they had the same problem. I sent my M8 to Leica US to check out, and they agreed that the reduced-magnification finder shows reduced brightness in the framelines. In other words, to my complaint they answered, "Sorry, but that's the way it is." For that reason, it sounds to me as if there was missed communication between you and Solms on that aspect. No matter. I'm glad it worked out well for you. Your experiment with Leica didn't pay off as you had hoped, but you came out well at the end of the day. Some of us (sniff, sniff) still haven't received an M9.
Guest malland Posted March 8, 2010 Share #64 Posted March 8, 2010 Howard, I didn't have the M8.2 to compare the brightness of the viewfinder frame lines but I had no problems with that camera in bright light the way I did with the M9. —Mitch/Paknampran Barrier
jaapv Posted March 8, 2010 Share #65 Posted March 8, 2010 That is really puzzling, Mitch, as both the display and the viewfinder on M8,M8.2 and M9 are identical but for the size of the framlines.
Guest malland Posted March 8, 2010 Share #66 Posted March 8, 2010 Jaap, sorry, I've garbled this: the problem was that the LEDs in the viewfinder were not visible on a bright day here. The M9 manual states that the brightness of the LEDs are adjusted according to ambient brightness — and it may be that in the M9, as opposed to the M8.2, this adjustment is not turned up bright enough in order to save the battery, but Leica never responded to me on this point. The frame line issue was that my Summilux-50 (pre-ASPH) did not bring up the right frame lines, although it did this correctly on my previous M8.2 and on my M6. The same lens belonging to a friend did activate the correct frame lines. Leica said my lens needed adjustment. Actually, I sent it in with my M9 (on the second round to Solms) and had it coded and it was adjusted as well. —Mitch/Paknampran Bangkok Hysteria©: Book Project
FredSF Posted March 8, 2010 Share #67 Posted March 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I may ne off course here, but aren't framelines "accuracy" supposed to be part of this poetic adventure that the M is all about? I've shot soviets, made great shots; I've shot Ms, an d made great shots too... I had issues with a 'Blad with a prism... as it turns out, nothing's so perfect. Let's keep a part of chance and mistery away from constant dead in accuracy
