LRF Posted December 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently bought a D Lux 4 from B&H in NYC. I also bought the Leica leather case, because it was beautiful and seemed to be well made. In practice though, I have found it cumbersome and not very useful, apart from being a secure place to leave the camera when I'm not using it. If I want to take a photo, the camera has to be taken completely out of the case and then held only by the wrist strap. The beautiful thing about the D Lux 4 is it's size. I want it hanging around my neck all the time, ready to catch a moment in time, but I also want to offer it a degree of protection, from rain, knocks, dust and dirt. I have found a pretty good solution. I keep the leather case at home, and use it as a 'garage' for my little Leica. When I go out exploring, I attach a camera 'wrap' to the tripod mount socket. It's a simple flap of neoprene that wraps around the camera with a velcro closure but stays attached to the base with a screw. It protects the LCD screen, Lens etc. from zipper/button rub and is also quite discreet. I leave on the Leica neck strap, which I find useful for bracing the camera when shooting in low light. I bought my wrap from Amazon, but I've seen the in stores as well. It is made by PEDCO and the XL size fits the D-Lux 4 perfectly.. They have a website, UltraPod camera supports from PEDCO where you can see them. I was shooting in the snow today and it was easy to open and close one handed, and offered good insulation and protection. For less than $30 inc. postage, it's a lot more useful than the pretty Leica model, and for me, it suits the nature of the camera. An ever-ready quality compact. ricardojh Posted December 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 24, 2009 LRF- Interesting solution. Do you think it works with the grip attached, and how about the Leica viewfinder? Ricardo
h00ligan Posted December 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 24, 2009 That looks like quite a helpful case, thanks for sharing the info.
farnz Posted December 24, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 24, 2009 I use a 'holster' that I made from a cheap copy of the Leica leather case and simply cut the top and flap off with a craft knife. The holster has a belt loop so it sits at my waist and my DL4 fits safely and snugly into it but can be instantly 'drawn' without releasing flaps, Velcro etc when needed. I also use the Ricoh LC-1 cap so my DL4 is in my hand and ready to shoot inside 2 seconds. Pete.
Tenor1 Posted December 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 24, 2009 Welcome to the forum LRF and thanks for that site. I have a similar case for my C-Lux made by Lowepro. They don't make the larger size and I always wanted one for my DL4. The wrap is one of the most convenient designs I found so far. The hinge allows it to swing completely below that camera and doesn't interfere with holding the it. The design is simple yet extremely practical adding very little bulk to the camera. LRF Posted December 27, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted December 27, 2009 LRF-Interesting solution. Do you think it works with the grip attached, and how about the Leica viewfinder? Ricardo I think it would work fine with the handgrip attached (I don't have one), but not with the viewfinder. I'm thinking of buying the viewfinder but I tried both the Leica and the Panasonic models on my camera and preferred the Panasonic, both in appearance and clarity. The fact that it is $200 cheaper will probably seal the deal. I don't think it's an accesory I'll use all the time. What's been your experience with the finders? Tenor1 Posted December 28, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the Panasonic version and like it. The only problem is using the zoom. I just keep it on the 24mm setting and crop if needed.
