tashley Posted December 23, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 23, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) My S2 arrived today. The packaging is nice and the battery is charging... but I am stuck in London because the trains are cancelled so as it gets dark here I realise that my flash is in the countryside and gratification is therefore delayed until tomorrow. Good things come to those that wait! Tim

tashley Posted December 23, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted December 23, 2009 Congratulations on your purchase. I know it was a tough decision. Thanks Mark! On my own head be it, but I did spend a lot of time talking to various people at Leica including Stefan Schultz and I got good answers to all my questions and am as confident as one can ever be that the system range that I need will appear. The camera feels really lovely and in fact now I have got to grips with assigning custom functions and using them, the usability issues I had identified as a potential problem (such as exposure compensation) are all (so far, limited experience) livable with at worst and no problem at all at best. I just look forward to using it in daytime.... but for now am doing some tripod shots at mixed ISO. Best Tim

c6gowin Posted December 24, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 24, 2009 Yes, Tim holiday obligations may get in the way of you fully exploring your new camera, but you can be happy knowing you have given yourself a great Christmas present (even if it is a work tool). Have a great holiday season. I look forward to your reports on the S2 as I am on verge of taking the plunge myself.

Well please do feel free to ask any questions you might have - there were plenty of things I found difficult to ascertain before purchase simply because no one had one! tashley Posted December 26, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted December 26, 2009 Congratulations, Tim! Whish you lots of good light to shoot with your S2. BTW, took another look at your website. Very good work, the Iceland series is really outstanding! Can't wait to see your first S2 photo's. Thank you Peter! In fact the reason I eventually went for the S2 is in part because of my experience in Iceland last year with the Phase One gear I have, which annoyed me so much that I ended up using mostly an M8 for that work. These days I know the quirks of the Phase system much much better but I still haven't fallen in love with them! Tim
marknorton Posted December 26, 2009 Share #16 Posted December 26, 2009 Good for Tim, of all the people here, we probably expected he would be the first to take the plunge. A leap of faith, though, that Leica will go beyond the camera, grip, spare battery and, what, 2 lenses currently available to deliver the complete system professional/advanced enthusiast users will expect. It will be interesting to see when the other lenses promised - and the CS versions - appear. I'll look forward to hearing more about the camera in real use and seeing some results. Tim, OT, but where did you get to with the M9 and the 18mm Super-Elmar? Did you find one which worked or did you give up in the finish?
okram Posted December 26, 2009 Share #17 Posted December 26, 2009 How is the finder? It seems to me the most important part of this camera that is not talked about much... How would you compare it to Hass. 500 V series with prism? Thanks, M
marknorton Posted December 26, 2009 Share #18 Posted December 26, 2009 Elsewhere, Seal waxes lyrical about the finder, it's an area where Leica can really excel. Just a pity that they continue to serve up the same dreary old thing on the M9.
tashley Posted December 26, 2009 Author Share #19 Posted December 26, 2009 The finder is the brightest, clearest, largest I think I've ever seen... but of course there are plenty of cameras that I haven't used such as a Hassy 500V with prism! To be honest, in this territory finders are pretty good anyway and it might come down to what info they show more than just how bright and clear they are (which in any event might be seriously affected by the lens in use). The AFDIII lens has more comprehensive viewfinder info (especially the amount of exposure compensation set) and it shows both 100% of the FOV AND a slim margin around that whereas the S2 VOF shows a bit less than 100%. In any event is is pretty darned good! @Mark, thanks mate! I had a long conversation with Leica before taking this plunge and am totally confident that in Q1 the CS versions will start to appear and that sometime soon the 24mm will also appear. I also believe that some other very interesting things will show up. One always has to accept some leeway here - when I bought my Phase system the great white hope was a 45mm TS lens that never materialised - but as someone in another post near here suggested, it won't be long before Novoflex or someone similar makes an adaptor for other MF glass to be used on the S2... and I have some quite nice MF glass! also @Mark, I got my original lens back after taking a few weeks to establish that a lot of 18mm super elmar's have a focus ring that turns past infinity and that I could have it fixed. In fact I asked my dealer, who had taken it back in order for it to go to Milton Keynes/Solms, to hold off having it foxed while I bottomed out the issue. In the end it took so long to get my questions answered that I went past my 1 month's return period and my dealer refused to refund it so I had to take it back. I a) never use it, and won't until (if!) the FW fix appears and don't deal with that dealer any more: I got my S2 elsewhere...
tashley Posted December 26, 2009 Author Share #20 Posted December 26, 2009 Sorry, but that's what Christmas does to a man! This is my 3 year old nephew expressing his contempt for photography. It's not a great shot, really, I know that - but it shows that the 180 is stellar, that the SF58 works really well on the S2, that the S2 can focus in near-darkness pretty well. Taken with the 180mm F3.5 at F9.5, 1/125th second, ISO 160 and the SF58 flash with bounce and fill. Developed in LR3 Beta with defaults. Full frame: 100% crop: At some point around here a camera stops being a camera and becomes a microscope...
