Sorry, guys, forgot to mention that they are from the GXR with A12 :D, but allegedly, X1 and GXR share the same sensor. If Ricoh only launched a fast 28mm equiv module with the same sensor. This would make the GXR quite a package.

Ecaton,

GXR images look tempting but . . . I DON'T CARE!

All Japanese digital cameras are too fiddly and gadget-laden . . . I want my bonehead-simple X1 with its optical viewfinder.

-g

And you shall get it.

Yet, you obviously never used a Ricoh GRD or GRX or Sigma DP, they are anything but fiddly or gadget laden. As far as UI is concerned, the Ricohs set the benchmark among the compact ones.

Here are a couple of high iso shots from my first day owning the X1. The pictures are taken in Frankfurt in dark conditions on free hand. I had the autofocus set to 11point. The focus was off in some pictures but there were several successful ones too. The photos are jpegs directly from the camera using "preset film = B&W high contrast".

The first picture is iso1600, the other two are iso3200. Shutter times are 1/30, 1/25 and 1/50.

Amazing results for many dslr's but coming from a fancy pants point & shoot? :D

They look great to me. Where did you buy the cam? I live in Frankfurt (okay, Offenbach :D) too. Just called you my dealer yesterday and they said there is a good chance for the week-end :)

These High-Iso capabilities is it what convinces me. And the fact that you can not change the lens. What could is a compact camera if you carry several lenses with you?

Jpmac, thank you for the nice feedback. Yes I'm happy with the results of the first night with the X1 myself. But of course there are several less good pics also but they are not as important as the good ones. :)

Don Helmudo, I am travelling in Germany on busniess and took a planned detour to the Leica Factory in Solms. Their factory shop had recieved a few X1:s and I was there just in time to buy the first one. My lucky day. :)

Jsrockit, You are right about the "old trick" of making noise less visible by shooting B&W. So today I decided to shoot at least some colour photos. I am travelling in Germany this week. The day was filled with meetings and driving the autobahn, so it was again dark when I had the chance to go out with the X1. Today's city is Munich. Again all pictures are jpegs, directly from the camera only resized in Windows paint. The colour ones are "preset film = natural" and the B&W one is again "B&W High contrast". The colours in natural mode look nice but are not very vivid, so the colour shots may still have some of the B&W "old trick" benefit. I can't handle raw files on my laptop so I'm bound to jpegs for the time being. Shutter times are 1/80 - 1/60s and aperture f=2.8 - 3.5.

Hopefully I will tomorrow night have the chance to try what the X1 can do at night with a tripod.

Again, the third day of owning the X1, I did not have any time to take pictures in daylight bacause I had meetings during the day. But the good side of business trips is that all time not scheduled for meetings is free, so again I had an evening of time on my own with the X1 in the city of Munich. Again I do not have access to raw-converter at the moment so I use either "B&W High contrast" or "Natural" and take jpg:s directly from the camrea. The pics attached in this message are taken with iso3200. These are again the best pics form a large sample.

My own impression after three days is that the performance at iso3200 is certaily good enough to be useful. If photos are enlarged or cropped there will be visible noise but the noise is to my eye low enough to keep the iso3200 useful in low light conditions. I kept the camera at iso3200 for most of the night and only switched to iso1600 a couple of times when there was some stronger light source nearby.

offtopic:

As a comparison I also took some pictures with a tripod at iso100 and long shutter times. That's a different kind of fun for the occasions when you want to carry the tripod. The sharpness is on a totally different level. The X1 can be used in many different ways...

This is again a jpg from the camera resized in windows paint. I think this picture could be somewhat improved in lightroom. The shutter is 15 seconds at f=16. Sorry for the offtopic (this is iso100, not iso3200!!).
