A positive X1 review

Means nothing. The same thing could be said about a 100 different point and shoot cameras. There are web sites with excellent photo's from cell phones. How would anyone know that Stewerd doesn't have an incentive to post a positive review?

Now, why is there a jerk on every thread?

I don't have any problem with the outcome of the review. Companies like to have pro's that use their products and are pretty confident that will give what ever they're testing a positive review. To be expected. Readers look at it and think because some pro likes it. it must be good. That's how they sell all of those Tiger Woods golf clubs and Air Jordans. Means nothing,,,except money in the bank for Leica. If you want to buy into this, you're exactly who it's amied at.

It actually seems you do. But yes, you are right about the marketing methods - but that's just it: marketing, commercials, etc.

But that doesn't mean that every review is based on an incentive (or something similar).

Off course the review is definitely aimed at me (or more precisely people like me) . I use Leica in order to achieve a superior image quality. Not more, not less. And most reviews of the X1 state a superior image quality for this kind of camera.

Now is that a bad thing? I would settle with no!

I don't know how you can say that I'm trashing him. I think all my statements are true. I didn't say anything about his ability as a photographer. These people are just trying to sell you something and telling you what you want to hear. No one is unbiased` so you have to take these reviews with a grain of salt and your eyes open. Insulting me won't change that.

Guaranteed.

Good to not take the bait.

Much easier to trash someone like Stewart Weir than take photographs like his.

Sure, Leica is trying to sell you something... but how do we know this reviewer is? What's in it for him?

That's why you have to take it with a grain of salt. I don't know if he has some agreement with Leica or is just trying to educate us out of the kindness of his heart. I go by the saying of believe almost nothing of what you read and half of what you see.Especially when it comes to the press or media, be it internet of main stream. Eveyone has an agenda and most of it has to do with self promotion and profit.

Actually I just came back from walking the dog and it is beautiful outside.Cold but sunny and a clear sky. Now I'm going to put a fire on in the shop , make a cup of coffee and work on the White Oak table I'm building. Life is good. :)

Bottom line.

There are no totally objective reviewers, pros or regular users alike.

No one else can tell you what the right camera is for you.

The verdict is still out on the X1 in terms of getting a whole set of reviews or even knowing what the release version will be.

You never have enough info to make the right decision.

My question is: what's the personal payoff in demeaning the integrity of a respected high quality pro (disclaimers or not this is what the entry did) and patronizingly "enlightening" us about the manipulative ways of reviewers ("they all are probably bought" theory)?

Old adage of advice given me by some colleagues some years ago.

"Never wrestle with a pig. You'll both get filthy and the pig will love it."

I'm gone from this thread.

Waiting for some word from a Leica insider regarding changes in the firmware.

Taking each piece of new info as rationally as I can.

...and avoiding toxic, self-serving, patronizing entries.

Have fun.

Well, that's absolutely true, Mark. None of this stuff exists in a vacuum.

I had a friend call last night... "need a small camera, good in low light.... something cool... add on lenses and flash"...

I scratch my head... I know this guy all too well. So it begins... "not sure you can have small, good in low light, and changeable lenses." Knowing the response in advance, I ask... "did you look at the Panasonic GF1?" "yeah..." he says, "too big."

So the conversation goes through all the options... including the G11 etc. etc. "Have you seen the Olympus EP2," I ask.

Citing the caveat that 'good in low light' is relative to the size, I recommended the Oly. But his final question was, "would you use it?"

I avoided answering because I personally don't like the camera. But I'm convinced, it's the right camera for him. Money is no object... he'll buy one with all the lenese, a flash and the rest of the whistles and bells.... and he'll be happy until something else sexy catches his eye.

So... who am I to squelch his dreams?

Point is, reviews are reviews, ownership is ownership. I mean, hey... it took me two go rounds with the Digilux 2. The first version I had over three years ago didn't suit my needs at the time. Plus, in all honesty, my head wasn't where it is now... not that my head has moved from my neck, mind you. But, I truly didn't understand the personality of the camera... and I really wasn't thinking in those terms at the time.

There are a lot of good cameras that do different things for different users. And, a lot of them spit out some pretty nice images. I loved the IQ of my D-Lux 3. It got lost. I wouldn't mind having the "toy" replaced... but I'm over it. I'm just not into that type of camera anymore.

For me, it comes down to the image quality and how I connect with the camera and the feel of using it. There will always be trade offs. Maybe it's no viewfinder, maybe it's the fixed lens, maybe it's the price. As long as it isn't the image quality, I'll simply weight out any other compromises to see if they're deal breakers.

To each is own.

JT

It is refreshing to see so many comments that are supportive of the new Leica X1. It seems that the camera is already available in parts of the USA. It is expected to be available in Australia from or after January 2010. I am interested in the reported simplicity of operation of this camera and impressed by some of the images which have so far appeared in various forums. I look forward to more user reports and images during the next few weeks.
