From the latest info on the Adobe forum thread...

- the constant crashing with M9 files seems to be happening on Mac and Windows

- occurs running LR in 64-bit or 32-bit mode (the crash is less common in 32-bit)

Ouch!

Except it is not a universal problem. Works OK on Vista64bit so I wonder what combinations of operating systems fail? Is the problem repeatable, how many others are affected, etc.

I don't know what you mean my 'universal' but these crashes are actually 100% repeatable and widespread across several key OS platforms. Once alerted to it, Adobe were able to reproduce the problem themselves very easily.

Initially, some people thought it worked fine on Windows 7 too but it seems that is also affected. Others thought it was fine when running in 32-bit mode as a workaround on Mac OS X or Windows 7 but according to recent posts it seems that it might not be the case . I don't know about Vista64 - you're the first one to report on that but feel free to add to the Adobe thread.

Beyond the bug itself (which understandably happens), I find it odd that Adobe would make further code changes to the final release candidate without going through another iteration of beta testing. Normally that RC version would see a full round before being blessed as the final production release.

It sounds like we've got some M9 users here who have been participating in the beta program and such an obvious bug would quickly have revealed itself.

I have been using Ligthroom 2.6 RC (the pre-release one) without any problems on my M9 files. I am using a Imac with Snow Leopard.

I don't plan to update to the final 2.6 though based on this thread.

Done that, curiously when I was working on some files this morning it is now reporting the f Stop from images taken my my M9. I don't remember that on 2.6RC, also it reports the f stop (admitably an estimate) within CS4 and I dont remember that before ACR5.6 but my memory plays tricks some days.

That estimated f-stop was in LR 2.6 RC as well.

I installed LR 2.6 yesterday on both my iMac and MacBook Pro. Both have identical iterations of Snow Leopard. I did not have the 2.6 RC on there; just upgraded from 2.5 to 2.6. The MacBook Pro seems stable, but the iMac LR app crashes every time I fire it up. I couldn't adjust from 64 to 32 bit if I tried; it crashes before I can get to the controls.

I now can't find LR 2.5 on my computer, even using Spotlight. I supposed I could go back in Time Machine. And ideas how I can get 2.5 back on my Mac?

This is a big bummer, and shakes my faith in Lightroom. With 21 inches of snow outside to shovel, I don't really have time for this ;-)

Hi John,

To switch it to 32-bit mode you don't run LR to change a setting. Instead, you should select the icon for Lightroom in the Finder, hit cmd-I to bring up the 'Info' pane and the mark the checkbox beside the 'Open in 32-bit mode' text. Then launch it again and see how you get on. It will be less snappy but may not crash (some people say it crashes anyway but I haven't seen that myself).

If you want to go back to 2.5, one the Adobe guys one the thread I linked above gives a download link but I'm not sure how good their installer at downgrading cleanly.

The Adobe QA team are getting quite a reputation for missing serious bugs like this (it has happened several times before).

Enjoy the snow!

Tony

FYI - don't know if this will work for everyone, but I went back via Time Machine to Friday night, restored Lightroom 2, copied it so it is called "Lightroom 2 Copy" in the finder, and even though it is Lightroom 2.6, it is now stable.

John,

That therefore looks to me as if there could be a missing file in the release version of LR2.6.

Good for you Chris! I'm sure being a Windows guy, the opportunity the give such digs to us Mc guys are rare so when they come along enjoy them ;-)

Humble pie time - Same problem also emerged on both of my Windows 7 pro 64 bit systems - so it's Adobe's fault! The trick is to revert to LR2.5. As the Adobe Standard calibration profile for the M9 is retained, you get the benefits of the improved colour rendering + Exif Data in on screen info AND no crashes. Adobe will need to bring out a revised 2.6 or a fixed 2.7 soon...

I just hope that Adobe are quicker at getting this sorted than Apple have been at getting the 10810 error irretrievable Finder crash sorted on Sno Kitty. I have yet another conference call booked with them for this afternoon, to run through the results of the latest Capture Data and Syslog files I have been sending them. At the last estimate, there are now in excess of 85,000 Snow Leopard users with this horrible issue. Three months so far and counting - it's a bit like waiting for an M9!

I have been running the beta of Lightroom 2.6 and tonight the app notified me that the official 2.6 is out so I downloaded and installed it.

Now suddenly I find the app crashes reproducibly trying to import M9 DNG files. After the 15th one it crashes every time so am no longer able to get my images imported into the Lightroom catalogue. This wasn't happening with the 2.6 beta or 2.5.

Is anyone else getting this crash importing their M9 files into LR 2.6?

Yes, the same problem here with LR 64 bit and Win 7 64 bit ultimate.

Interesting.

FWIW, I'm running LR 2.6 64 bit in Snow Leopard on M8 DNG with no difficulty.

For once, gives me cheer that my M9 hasn't yet arrived! Love that the info pane now gives me the speciifc lens and apperture "Leica 28 mm Summicron" instead of generic focal length.

So does this also affect Adobe Camera Raw 5.6(final) for developing M9 dngs (but not cataloging and storing them - for which I used Bridge CS4)?

Or is it a file-handling problem unique to "do it all in one place" LightRoom?

I'm using ACR 5.6 with no problems but it is stil the beta version.

I still use XP professional, but it crashes after 9 pictures from the M9. I don't have a dedicated camera-profile for the M9 either.

Do you downlaod from your M9? I use XP Pro & copy the contents of the card via a card reader into my file structure Year / Month / & number each card load sequentially. I have then imported them into LR via my MSN home network to my Vista64bit but leave the DNGs in their original location, give them keywords in LR for referencing in the future, etc. Process them on either P/C. So far - so good. True to say I have not had a prolific photo session for a volume test.

Also OK to use ACR5.6 (final) on my XP or 64bitVista to take strait into CS4 - OK so far 'touch wood'.
