contax g lenses on m9

W-e-l-ll.... to be a bit more accurate:

1. You can't use them as is (no focusing ring, and no link to the rangefinder). There have been some conversions done, including adding those critical features, to allow G lenses to work on Leica M - but the conversions usually cost so much that it is vastly cheaper to just trade your 45/90 for Leica equivalents.

(actually, those prices don't look too bad. Back when Contax quit photography, conversions were usually $2000; now they seem to be under $1000 for most lenses)

2. If you absolutely, positively want the Zeiss "look" on an M9, there are also the Zeiss ZM lenses (although you'd have to choose between a slower 85 f/4 or a vastly more pricey 85 f/2).

3. Yes, they would be up for the task, otherwise. Might have to figure out 6-bit coding for anything wider than the 45, though.

I was going to get a 45 converted by Dirk Rosler, as it was a lens I loved on my G1 and 2. In the end I decided it was too much trouble and to go for a S/H coded 11826 50mm Summicron - mistake - got 2 duff ones, one after the other. I now have a 50 Planar, which is a wonderful lens, as long as you like high contrast. It has beautifully smooth focussing and a very positive aperture ring.

I have a 90mm Sonnar that was converted in Japan and sold by Dirk Rosler. I used it with my M8.2 and found it to be small, sharp and produced beautiful color. I was also surprised at how easy it was to focus. In then end the final shipped price was close to a used 90mm Elmarit 2.8 but it does have that Zeiss Sonnar look to it. I am very happy with it.

One thing to note is that the f-stops are smooth and continuous like on a large format shutter. No big deal and even preferable at times.

Dirk provided excellent service and information. I have no affiliation with him or his outfit. He just did a superb job on the whole transaction.

Cheers,

Hugo
