Advertisement Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Hi cheewai_m6, Take a look here AUSTRALIAN m9 waiting lists.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
eddale Posted December 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2009 There are over thirty people in Melbourne alone waiting for a camera. Well over nine in Perth and at least 12 in Sydney at the main dealer there. There was one on ebay but I think that sold. With a bit of luck a delivery will sneak in before Xmas but that will be taken up with existing orders. You're in for a long wait in Aus i'm afraid. Most of us here are celebrating our triple figure wait as we hit 100 days.
jaques Posted December 17, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2009 I figured ordering in Australia would just take too long- and when the camera was released the prices quoted were around $11,400 AUD or more- which was a joke. in the US the camera was listed for 7000 USD- which at that time was 7500AUD. For me it was a no brainer: I placed my order with a New York dealer on the 23rd October. Yesterday I heard my M9 arrived in NY- and today I see it has crossed the United States and boarded an aircraft... I should have it by monday- and even if I get nabbed on the import Tax - I expect I will save at least a 1000 dollars... I would love to support Australian dealers- if they had stock- and at a competitive price. If I was considering placing an order now: I would do it with a US dealer or even better a New Zealand dealer. Last quote I had from an Australian dealer was 9200- well down on the absurd 11,400 but still ridiculous.
thrice Posted December 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2009 Myself and geoff both got our cameras from kayell qld for 8599. Their list was shorter than perth and they're much better guys to deal with anyway.
parasko Posted December 17, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2009 I can't believe anyone would buy a Leica or any camera from an Australian dealer. The markup prices are just absurd. Even having an Australian warranty for Canon/Nikon cameras doesn't really mean much these days...I'd rather just send the camera to the US for repairs...turn around time is much quicker! Why would you pay at least 2k more for a camera? Crazy stuff! ...and don't get me started on the absurd film prices for Provia 100/400x which is half the price in the US. ...where do these people get off!!! rob_x2004 Posted December 17, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2009 I got a very polite call from the importer when post service my MP fell apart. "Well we might have an old M6 but that would only be a loaner for pros down here. We can get you the screw you need but I dont know when we would order and it would take around a month or more so if you were going to approach solms direct ...". Similarly when Solms first service was total dud... On the other hand the importers tech was really helpfull when the repairs fell within his remit, that was fixing a light leak out of the box. My previous purchases from Aus dealers have been a quick phone call ... "Hi have you got (whatever). Ah ok. How much? Got a BSB/Acct number? No dont worry just send the invoice with the box." Will I be going onto any wait list? Two words, second word 'OFF!'
cheewai_m6 Posted December 17, 2009 Author Share #7 Posted December 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) as thrice said. kayell qld is doing the m9 for $8599. which compared to the original price of $11500 is a big difference. but with the current exchange rate, USD$7000 is AUD$7955. what's the import tax for australia, 10%? $7955 + 795 = $8750. however for a shorter wait. a package from a US dealer would surely disclose the value of the camera (USD$7000) wouldn't they? customs would definitely see it's worth over $1000 and i would get hit up with the tax. i'd be paying and extra $150, plus the postage. what to do?? maybe i can hold off ordering till monday and see what other people's experience is with buying from USA. at the same time, kayell is great! clearly i'm still undecided. i need the 9 by may and whether i get it feb or april, doesn't really concern me. GST is on the lot, including postage and insurance. Its a goods and services tax. Customs assessment fee is a charge, in addition. You might escape it if it comes through the mail. Mail and tracking number is good. Customs will screen (XRay / sniff) the post for drugs, chemicals in bomb making, fauna, undisclosed gems and stuff, but having someone there to pick up every GST commitment maybe not. If it comes via courier / freight forwarder you will be charged becasue everythign runs through their computerised accounts GST/BAS etc. Head to the customs site for tthe info. PS ... Your exchange rate might be a bit too optomistic for what your bank (or anyone) gives you and any transfer fees. At eleven and a half the price was a joke, at nine and a half it was still half a joke but if you have someone willing to lock in at eight and a half you arent going to do much better till the stuff goes on eBay and the 9.2 is due to hit the shelves. Which will happen in about .... .

Which will happen in about .... . Agreed!...though the wait might be slightly longer than a US/UK purchase. ...I am heading towards an overseas purchase of the M9. PS: If you decide to purchase via overseas dealer, I wouldn't be spending this much money and then using a sub-optimal shipping method to avoid any taxes...for something this expensive a reliable courier (like UPS) is paramount! You will be charged GST on item plus shipping but cameras do not attract import duty tax. I have purchased ALOT of camera equipment via B&H in NYC and no import tax has ever been charged. So basically 10% extra on top of purchase price+shipping.
caparobertsan Posted December 17, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 17, 2009 I would buy it from NZ or USA. I think NZ price was much cheaper than AUS. I bought R8 winder from NZ importer directly and it was cheaper. I assume it will be cheaper. You should email them. And if so You can go to NZ and pick up yourself. travel cost is so cheap to NZ! Just suggestion! I am still enjoying my M8!
jaques Posted December 18, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 18, 2009 Ok- so my M9 has now been shipped and today I got the call to pay the Tax- the total on that was 830. When I ordered the camera I locked in a very good exchange rate- so all up my total cost for the M9 was 8600AUD including shipping- which is right what Kayall is now supposedly offering....but I will have a camera next tuesday- exactly 8 weeks after ordering. I wonder how long till all of Australia's orders are dealt with? I have heard leica has 10,000 outstanding orders.... who knows?
Jad Posted January 10, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 10, 2010 Hi, I live in Adelaide and placed my order and deposit on Oct 27th and received my grey M9 on the 23rd Dec.
scc Posted January 10, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 10, 2010 I know Photo Warehouse in Auckland, NZ has had half a dozen M9's through now, I bought one a week after enquiring, and the cost was NZD$10,000. I'm sure they'd be happy to send to Australia, they even mentioned to me some of the sales they had made were to Asia because of the price.

hoppyman Posted January 11, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 11, 2010 Well if you locate one from an overseas seller, of course the actual exchange rate fluctuates. Be aware though (unless you pay cash in USD and there are fees for conversion there too) that the rate applied by your credit card company is certainly not the same as one you might find as a nominal figure quoted in your morning newspaper. After whatever rate they apply on the transction, allow for conversion transaction fees too. Also the GST is applicable to the entire amount quoted on your invoice, that is on the the price plus on the freight/insurance costs plus on any customs agents fees to process your transaction. If you don't care when your camera arrives in February or April, really weigh all of the considerations, including the benefits of support from your local dealer (price guarantee with deposit now and great local support included). Just my 2c plus postage + insurance plus agent fees + GST worth! as thrice said. kayell qld is doing the m9 for $8599. which compared to the original price of $11500 is a big difference. but with the current exchange rate, USD$7000 is AUD$7955. what's the import tax for australia, 10%? $7955 + 795 = $8750. however for a shorter wait. a package from a US dealer would surely disclose the value of the camera (USD$7000) wouldn't they? customs would definitely see it's worth over $1000 and i would get hit up with the tax. i'd be paying and extra $150, plus the postage. what to do?? maybe i can hold off ordering till monday and see what other people's experience is with buying from USA. at the same time, kayell is great! clearly i'm still undecided. i need the 9 by may and whether i get it feb or april, doesn't really concern me.
