24mm Summilux on a GF1

Hi all,

Has anyone try fitting a 24mm summilux on a GF1 with a Voitlander 4/3 M adapter? I was trying to test it earlier on but had a bit of difficulty mounting it. When it fitted smoothly, I cant turn the focussing ring. On closer inspection of the lense, I noticed that the internal moving part just inside the rear flange is slightly thicker than my other M lenses and also the rear protrusion is about 5mm longer compared to my 35mm lux, 75 lux and 50 Noct. Could that be the reason as the space in the gf1 is pretty shallow.

Best,

SM

[...] I just spent a weekend shooting with 24 Elmarit + EP-1 using the same adapter. It works smoothly and no problem with the mounting at all. I'm very pleased with the results.

Any corner fringing? Chromatic aberration?

I have read that wider Leica M optics perform poorly on Micro 4/3 cameras due to the old "non telecentric rays" bugbear.

So far I have used my M 35mm Summicron ASPH and M 50mm Summilux on my GF1 - both work great. Was thinking of getting the 24mm Elmarit ASPH but was holding off due to the image degradation reports.

BTW the 20mm Panasonic pancake lens is quite good, albeit with a hefty amount of barrel distortion. Luckily it is pretty easy to correct after RAW development.

Hi Andrew,

I'm not familiar with the said problem you mentioned, but in general I'm quite pleased with the 24 Elmarit on the E-P1. Yes there's very slight CA but only in extreme conditions of highlights on shiny objects, but it's VERY slight you have to see it on 100% crop. I'm not complaining since the overall quality is very very good.

I'm still waiting for my M9, so the E-P1 is making good use of my lens for the time being!

Many thanks as I can mount it but can't turn the focussing barrel.

Can you turn the focussing barrel with the adapter on the lens, but not mounted to the camera?

If not, then it is the adapter that is limiting things.

My worry would be that the rear of the lens is hitting the sensor if you cannot focus it when mounted. Be careful!

I guess I'm missing something here: what is the point behind putting a 24 Summilux on a GF-1 in the first place? I thought a "normal" 50mm-equivalent f/1.4 lens for $3,400 was bad enough - but a "normal" 50mm-equivalent f/1.4 lens costing $6,000?

I mean, I understand getting a nice "270 f/4" out of a 135 f/4 for $350 - or a "180 f/2" from a 90 Summicron.

Is this just a "Hillary" moment - "because it's there?"
