leif e Posted December 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got a used M8 (again ) and tonight I wanted to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. The present one is 1.102 I think. I dowloaded to my mac and followed all the instructions in Leica´s very instructive pdf-file. (Formatted card, saved the .upd file, put the card in, refitted the bottom plate and turned the camera on. Waited. Pushed Yes for upgrade. Voila: I keep getting this message: "Attention. Upgrade failed". the message comes promptly as I confirm the wish to make the upgrade. Can someone tell what I´m doing wrong? Please ...
Advertisement Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Hi leif e, Take a look here Upgrade trouble. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
2Bébèrt Posted December 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 15, 2009 Latest M8 firmware is 2.004 and you can find it here: http://us.leica-camera.com/assets/file/download.php?filename=file_4122.zip make sure your battery is full and format the SD card in the camera. Good luck.
Nicoleica Posted December 15, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 15, 2009 Besides the above excellent advice, you may need to re-download the firmware and try again with a fresh copy if an upgrade fails. Also, please ensure that you are using a plain SD card, not an SDHC card (I'm guessing that you are already doing this, as the camera recognises the card.), and it doesn't hurt to wait a while longer than Leica advises. Good luck.

leif e Posted December 15, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted December 15, 2009 Hm! It still doesn´t work. Is it possible that my current version is so old that I´m "skipping" a version or two, and the camera won´t allow it? Must look into this. leif e
2Bébèrt Posted December 15, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 15, 2009 Sorry, I didn't keep the old firmware updates. Perhaps someone, someware ..
Nicoleica Posted December 15, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) This may be a silly question, but have you copied the latest M8 firmware file (m8-2_004.upd) to the top-level directory on your SD card? Any other version (May be older than your current one.) may not install, or you may even have inadvertently downloaded an M9 firmware version which certainly won't install. farnz Posted December 15, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 15, 2009 After it asks you if you want to upgrade you need to wait 5 seconds before you confirm. Pete.
cidereye Posted December 16, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 16, 2009 Hm! It still doesn´t work.Is it possible that my current version is so old that I´m "skipping" a version or two, and the camera won´t allow it? No, firmware on most if not all digital cameras has everything in the latest release to update whatever firmware is on the camera so matter what release it is. Just got my M8 and I updated no problemo from exactly the same firmware as you to the very latest. As Nicole said, are you putting the firmware in the top level directory and using an SD card as opposed to a newer SDHC card? Easiest thing frankly is to format an SD card on your computer so it's totally clean and then just copy over the new firmware to card and then update. If that still won't work then something is not quite right with the firmware you are using as suggested I'd say.
leif e Posted December 16, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted December 16, 2009 Thanks again all of you! The card I use is a 2GB San Disk Extreme III (that´s ok, right?). I´m quite confident that I´ve stored the correct .upd file and at the correct level. I have not tried to format in the Mac - only in the camera. Will do that. I´ll also try another card. Then we´ll see. @ cidereye: I like your avatar pic! I use this for a signature in my emails (I work as a litt. critic): "Outside of a dog a book is man´s best friend. Inside of a dog it´s too dark to read" You know who said that. leif e
Nicoleica Posted December 16, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 16, 2009 I've just thought of one other small point that may sound silly, but could affect things. You haven't flipped the 'lock' tab on the SD card have you? During the firmware upgrade process, the camera needs to write to the card.
leif e Posted December 16, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted December 16, 2009 Nicole; I have not flipped.
