M7 DX coder

Hello all

I am really getting annoyed whe trying to get the film roll from my M7. I have to give it a bang on the bottom, and i'm sure that this may affect something in the long term. i have spoken to Leica, and they will replace the current DX reader system with a newer style optical system. this is free of charge, but it will cost $75 postage back to the Solms. Has anyone had this done, and is it a vast improvement? Any feedback would be welcome. I hate to send my camera off, knowing it will be gone for quite some time.

I second Andy. Mine was done a few years back and as well as improving the ease with which film rolls come out (although simple use does that too) more importantly it improves longer-term reliability by replacing a DX reader that is a known source of malfunction. But your steep postage bill is a consideration, of course.... On balance, however, better to get this done now for free than several years on when it could cost several times the postage...

I had this done earlier this year. It is an improvement, and while it is there, Leica will give the camera a check too.

Well worth it.

Mine took about 3 weeks door to door.

Does this only apply to 'in-warrany' products? I only ask because I investigated having both the VF and the DX coder done. I was quoted £180+ VAT for the viewfinder by Leica UK and told that to do the DX coder it would have to go to Solms and that they would assess the expense when it was there. Of course, it would be a no brainer to get it done free!

I just got mine back from Solms, sent it there from Finland on November 9, came back on December 11. It was impossible to use it with false reader, therefore the replacement was crucial. While at Solms, good people there adjusted the rangefinder, shutter, cleaned the camera... All at no cost, of course. I only payed Fedex one way, 45€. Good work, Leica people!

hey that's great to know. i'll send mine off once i get my mp back (vf seal). i did also ask about the viewfinder upgrade, and was quoted AUD$930. So i'm giving that a miss. the $75 is AUD, so it doesn't seem all that bad. thanks again all.

sent mine in for the free optical upgrade a month ago and got it back with a new but defective reader (one optical sensor was defunct so i always got the wrong ISO values). sent in again and got it back working - still wonder how this got through QA in the first place though.

Biglouis -- Yes, a free DX replacement applies only to in-warranty cameras. In fact, when Leica Solms replaced the reader in my M7 two or three years ago, they also at nil cost upgraded the finder to the MP variant. I think this was sort of in recongition that the DX problem took two visits to sort out -- the problems I had were created only partly by the malfunctioning DX reader: there was also a malfunctioning circuit board.

That's not right, Alun.

My M7 was a very early one (in fact all of them with the duff DX readers will be early ones) and was well out of warranty. Leica did the replacement and check over f.o.c.

I am pretty sure that I didn't get a finder replacement though

Hmm. In the new year I think I am tempted to send it to Leica UK pointing out that the defective reader really should be fixed gratis and see if they play ball. I don't mind paying for the upgrade patch but I'd want both items done at the same time, which only makes sense. Incidentally, when my M8 came back from Solms recently they also adjusted and cleaned everything gratis which was nice of them.

I sent mine last year and also received the mini-CLA, excellent service from Solms. Wonderful the way the film cassette just dropped in and out... ;) I've since sold the camera and the new owner tells me it's as steady as a rock.

Send it straight to Solms yourself, or via your dealer (which is what I did). Don't send it to MK.

Solms will change the old reader for the new one f.o.c.

How to tell an old reader from a new one?

I have a 2854… SN - a black 0.85 body (made 2004 according to Summilux.net).

Is there a way, to trick the reader (new or old), to have the blinking DX warning shut off at all times?

I push my film and shoot entirely at manual ISO.
