Tom Barry Posted December 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Christmas cactus starts blooming in mid-December. I shot this bloom this morning using the D-Lux2, using a light tent with two fluorescent lamps, RAW capture, processed in Elements 7 using Topaz Denoise 3:

allamande Posted December 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 11, 2009 Very pretty with nice color and contrast. I believe this is a succulent rather than a cactus though. Ece
Tom Barry Posted December 11, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted December 11, 2009 Very pretty with nice color and contrast. I believe this is a succulent rather than a cactus though. Ece Thanks for the compliment. They are true cacti, originating in the high forests of South America, where they grow as epiphytes, I think. Anyhow, they're lovely things. leicamann Posted December 11, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 11, 2009 Its a Schlumbergera..an Epiphyte...native to Brazil...... While the camera did a good job picking out the black and white points, I feel it dropped lots of the midtones, with a slight adjustment on Levels... and voila..perfect. Thanks for sharing Cheers,JRM

leicamann Posted December 11, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 11, 2009 That's the idea...somehow people think that digital is perfect...the photographer should always use their best resource, their best tool for photography..their memory...each time you click that shutter, your memory should also be taking a "visual record" of the shoot..that is your baseline to which you can decide whether the camera "got it" or not. Cheers, JRM Absolutely correct. I have a terrible time worrying about blowing out highlights with the tiny sensor in the D-Lux2 and my other compact, so much so that I sometimes forget to look at the rest of the photo closely enough to recognize areas that need attention.
