john_newell Posted December 13, 2009 Share #21 Posted December 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Everyone should test and come to their own conclusions, but I think "high dynamic" is less than useful and is unfortunately names, since it gives some people the idea that it has something to do with HDR photography. YMMV. My thoughts on the new firmware... The square aspect ratio is really cool. Now I can do Leicablad pictures! (more cameras should have this... its probably easy to program) The white balance bracket function. Sometimes my Leica just doesn't get the color balance right and I have to correct it in Photoshop. This function might help me reduce my post processing work, which is greatly appreciated. Exposure compensation from -3 to +3 is awesome and is more in tune with my Nikons now. I'm probably not going to use High Dynamic mode or the lens/menu resume modes, but I'm sure others my find them helpful.

espen Posted December 13, 2009 Share #22 Posted December 13, 2009 I was having problems with a red vertical "wire" on dark photos with my D-Lux 4. I was fearing this to be a hardware problem. My problem has been fixed with this release! Oh, and I love the new features! Thanx Leica! Edit: Oh, but I have another problem with my X-Lux 4.. My girlfriend absolutely loves it (she's taking pictures of products she's making/selling), so I'm hardly ever able to take the D-Lux 4 with me. I really should get another one for myself.. elgenper Posted December 13, 2009 Share #23 Posted December 13, 2009 This is grossly off-topic, but it would interesting to hear which mood goes with which language Well, it´s not primarily the question of which mood... more of which brand of beer I´m having.... Seriously, while English is easier for me, German is closer to the horse´s mouth for all Leica gear. No translation step means no translation errors..... Klassika Posted December 13, 2009 Share #24 Posted December 13, 2009 Is it possible to update from version 1.1 to 2.1, or does one have to install 1.2 at first?
Darius Posted December 13, 2009 Share #25 Posted December 13, 2009 First of all hello to all Leica camera users and photographers on this site as I have just joined your group very recently and very happy to be here ( I own Leica R5 and D-Lux 4) I am glad to read your informative comments on all matters of photography. I tried to down load the new Firmware for my D-lux 4 on the German site and it was not possible as the program/software is still 1.2 (which I downloaded last week).......I bought my camera this October in the Federal Republic of Germany and I currently live in Iran, yet I have saved the Leica camera Ag site to my computer, I was able to download the 1.2 update last week successfully, but I see no updates on the German site for the 2.1 version of this software......Why is this? Could someone help me on this.... I speak both English and German....Your help and advice is very much appreciated and I very much would like to download the 2.1 version of this software on my D Lux 4.....Regards. chf Posted December 13, 2009 Share #26 Posted December 13, 2009 Darius: the update is indeed not available on the german website at the moment. I have no idea why that is. I downloaded the update from the international site and it installed just fine on my dl4 bought in Germany. You should have no problem doing the same. wbarker Posted December 13, 2009 Share #27 Posted December 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) When you download a zipped file on a Mac, it will automatically unzip it, and even clean up afterwards. So all you have to do is copy the resultant file to a card as Paulpp pointed out. I use Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro. Two files were downloaded. Which one of these two is copied to a SD card? Or both? Or neither? DLX4_210-1.bin DLX4_210-1.bin.cpgz
burkey Posted December 14, 2009 Share #28 Posted December 14, 2009 Downloaded and firmware update complete. I'd very much like to know the focal lengths I'm setting the lens to. The FL remembered is handy but I wish Leica had of included the "step zoom" ability. I remember a couple of threads a while ago that lined up FL settings with letters on the LCD. Anyone remember those threads? Thanks in advance. . . . Burkey

kalina Posted December 14, 2009 Share #31 Posted December 14, 2009 I also wanted to add that, in autofocus mode, my camera does autofocus faster than before. Auto macro focus mode is still dog slow, but that's okay. I do everything with the regular auto focus or manual focus anyway. I don't see what the improvements are in manual mode. Is the box larger now? The D-Lux 4 just went from nice camera to really nice camera because of these new features.
mhoutman Posted December 14, 2009 Share #32 Posted December 14, 2009 tweet from @leica_camera D-Lux 4 firmware update offline since still containing a bug in French. All other languages OK. New update will come soon, sorry!
jlindstrom Posted December 14, 2009 Share #33 Posted December 14, 2009 nice and not nice... just as I was about to pull the trigger on updating my DL4 the firmware gets pulled.. I don't need french version so that bug wouldn't have meant a thing for me otoh, it's nice that they still care enough to fix these things. So I guess it's more power to Leica! regedit Posted December 15, 2009 Share #35 Posted December 15, 2009 I install the new firmware and works like a charm. Easy install like previous updates, and quite useful new features. Too bad they left behind step focal zoom feature, or at least, a display of focal in zoom scale. Otherwise, great job from Leica engineers! I'm amazed how much feedback they integrates in their updates. I think this is the real value of Leica brand, products being updates from the users feedback! jimbo035 Posted December 15, 2009 Share #37 Posted December 15, 2009 Downloaded and firmware update complete. I'd very much like to know the focal lengths I'm setting the lens to. The FL remembered is handy but I wish Leica had of included the "step zoom" ability. I remember a couple of threads a while ago that lined up FL settings with letters on the LCD. Anyone remember those threads? Thanks in advance.. . . Burkey ... a little experiment using EXIF data and a series of pictures taken at different zoom extensions which compared the location of the white zoom indicator bar to the: "1.64ft - 00(inf)" shown in the LCD while zooming. (The experimenter) used "P" mode and the digital zoom was turned off. Here are the results. If you set the white bar all the way to the left you (obviously) get 24mm. Under the "1" = 26mm. Under the "." = 28mm. Under the "6" = 32mm. Under the "4" = 37mm. Under the "f" = 41mm. Under the "t" 44mm. Under the "first empty space" = 48mm. Under the "hyphen" = 52mm. Under (actually a little to the left of) the "left infinity loop" = 57mm. And finally all the way to the right (again obviously) 60mm.
Angelos Viskadourakis Posted December 15, 2009 Share #38 Posted December 15, 2009 very sad that a step zoom function with certain focal lengths was not added,in my opinion was the only update that would be of serious use,but not, pity.:( Exposure bracketing to _+3 is useful for HDR effect, but very rarely i carry a tripod with DLUX4 which is mandatory for a successful HDR process, the step zoom that would allow us to add a zoom or standard viewfinder for composing holding the camera near to our eyes and work properly in daylight was ignored, pity.:(
ianman Posted December 15, 2009 Share #39 Posted December 15, 2009 When you download a zipped file on a Mac, it will automatically unzip it, and even clean up afterwards. So all you have to do is copy the resultant file to a card as Paulpp pointed out. This of course depends on the settings. For example in Safari if you uncheck the "Open safe files after downloading" (Preferences/General tab), the zip files will not be unzipped automatically.
