dpattinson Posted December 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 11, 2009 If anybody would do his or her raw conversions and first processing on a 15.5" laptop, which app would you choose? The old man from the Old Wet Dark Room I do all of mine on a 13" Dell with 2GB of ram at the moment, Both C1 and CS4(ACR) work just fine. Personally I prefer C1 for M8 raw files, especially high-iso because it handles the noise better. I use ACR when I know that I want to fiddle with midtone contrast (clarity) in specific areas - where the adjustment brushes really help.
holgerf Posted December 11, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 11, 2009 If anybody would do his or her raw conversions and first processing on a 15.5" laptop, which app would you choose? The old man from the Old Wet Dark Room The workflow with Aperture (or Lightroom) is saving me so much time that I ALWAYS import ALL of my imgages into Aperture und therefore use its raw conversion. If I want to use the sometimes better raw conversion in Phase1 I always can do this as an exception. I never could imagine how easy photographer’s life could be with these great new workflow apprach. The old man from the Old Wet Dark Room OMFOWDR, I just do Aperture on a 13.3" MacBook Pro. as well as my IMAC 20" on Aperture and CS4. I would NOT ever use a Windoze machine. Ever... But that's just me. Bob Leica@fuse.net
carlosecpf Posted December 11, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 11, 2009 I use Aperture in a Macbook Air 2GB and 128GB SDD and it works fine! It is not super fast, but it suit pretty well to my needs!

elgenper Posted December 11, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 11, 2009 Another vote for Lightroom; that´s what´s on my PowerBook. That said, final conversion is always done on my MacPro, with a calibrated 30" monitor; I don´t even use the preliminary adjustments from the PB. I don't think Lars is looking for Mac software. Too bad for him; Life is too short to waste on Win-dozing.....
lars_bergquist Posted December 12, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted December 12, 2009 Well I have run Macs for the last twenty years, doing advanced pre-press work among other things. I was worried that the layout of Lightroom would be too inflexible for a fairly small screen. Which app do you think has the best tools for RGB-to-BW conversions? I'd think channels would e close to mandatory. The Wet Man from the Old Darkroom
elgenper Posted December 12, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 12, 2009 ... I was worried that the layout of Lightroom would be too inflexible for a fairly small screen. Indeed, it´s a problem. But [shift]+[tab] makes the tool panels & c go away or reappear whenever needed, and that makes it doable, after all. But a bigger screen is bigger than a small one... Which app do you think has the best tools for RGB-to-BW conversions? I'd think channels would e close to mandatory. The Wet Man from the Old Darkroom FWIW, I´ve "discovered" Light Zone, which I like a lot for tonal control and B/W conversions. No channels in sight, and altogether a different way to work and think than Photoshop, but worth the effort. And anyone who recalls working with the Zone system in the dark and wet place, will feel right at home.... That said, the more advanced B/W conversions within Lightroom are quite decent, too. But some of the fine adjustments are still wanting, and esp. local adjustments are quite coarse in LR2, at least.
